In Current market conditions what is the career path for PM to choose to be more relevant?

In current market conditions Project Managers are losing their positions and finding difficulty to get new job opportunities. Many companies are reducing their middle management roles. As PMs are moved out of hands-on technical skills for some time, what is the up-skilling path they need to take to be more relevant in the market to find better opportunities?

Thanks Anton for your reply. When I am looking for job description for PM openings, these days they are looking for technical hands-on experience, more % technical and less % on people mgt, Project delivery exp. So to upskill, what is right path to take.

Anton is absolutely right. I also agree with what you’ve mentioned, these days, every industry became very specialized and unique in its own way so recruiters look for both People Management and Technical Skills.

In order to manage people at work you must have technical skills otherwise you just "manage" a set of tasks in a project management software without really understanding in details what those tasks are about. Without technical skills you just keep track of the tasks and report the progress. That's not people management.

Real people management means making decisions of technical nature that others must follow. You can't do that without technical skills.

You don't have to be a brilliant technical expert to manage people but you must have good experience working in the relevant domain of the people you manage. PMs that don't have relatively good technical skills manage projects but not people.

My experience has always been that this requirement is very much related to the industry. Some industries alway require more industry-related qualifications. Construction is one where there is normally a requirement for some engineering degree, something you won't find for ICT. But this is not new, the debate on whether a PM must have industry knowledge has been going on for ages from both the profession and recruiters.

I think recession is not only for project managers but many other roles as well. For example marketing managers.
