Hi all,

I’m still working on gaining PM knowledge on a daily basis. As I’m preparing to begin standardizing and familiarizing the processes I take when I take on a new project due to my preparation for the PMP exam in 2020, I wanted to reach out to the community and ask if anyone had any recommendations on a Project Checklist for small to mid-sized IT projects?

It would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Kevin -

What is the purpose of the checklist and what is its scope? For example, a checklist might be there to ensure the "ducks are lined up" for kicking off a project vs. another which is there to ensure that a project following a predictive lifecycle has been sufficiently planned.

Hi Kiron,

Thanks for the reply!

The purpose here is for me is to ensure that a project following a predictive lifecycle, however with the recent changes to the upcoming exam I was starting to think if I need to re-shift my focus and start using more agile approaches, but that's something I'm still in the process of learning so I'm not too familiar with that yet.

But what will the checklist check for?

Is it for specific types of outputs (e.g. Does your project have a charter? Is there a current, up-to-date RAID log?) or is it about activities or expected outcomes?

And is it to help a PM and team to increase the likelihood of project success or is it as an audit tool to help an independent auditor to assess how well the project is being managed?

Hi Kevin,

usually I advise my students to start with the project charter. And by following it, you have to manage the main topics :
- context
- business justifications
- objectives
- main deliverables
- milestones
- organization (team)
- major risks
- constraints and assumptions
- exclusions
After that you can start the tasks list.

I use a tool for that (Gouti) but it is not mandatory. You can of course manage this checklist by yourself.

Hope it helps you.

Christian
Christian,

Thank you for this! I will most definitely research the Gouti tool you mentioned.
