Project Charter vs Business case

Process: We have project proposal document leading to a Business case (if approved) which requires a considerable effort on estimation compared to a charter. Some people may comment that Project charter should come first.

I agree.... Business Case makes up the "what we need to have done" document. The Project Charter goes into the actual PROJECT specifics after that Business Case is established. In smaller projects and in smaller organizations, sometimes those can happen at the same time with the same people in the room.

PMBOK assume all the project are large. Thus to have the business case is important as it serve as justification. There will be an option of no go. However-- for most of the small project-- justification is skipped as boss tell you to complete it. in this case, business case serves only as a benifit analysis after chartered.

Hello, we are implementing a new PPM application at my job, my boss wants to combine the project charter with the business case to increase the speed of the project kickoff and delivery. Any thoughts?
