I know most of us are very well aware of such situations and experienced these on day to day basis. But i would like to know what such situations you faced and how did you resolved these.By politics i mean here, where Projects teams are divided in groups, each group strings are being pulled by different manager and every manager have their own agenda (hidden or apparent). Hence Projects suffers.... Saving Changes...
It comes back to how you start a project. If there isn't shared understanding and commitment towards the project's goals, then differing agendas can come into play.
It is also a good idea on critical projects to "bake" project success measures into the performance evaluation criteria for all key contributors to create incentives for alignment.
Helping the team to establish ground rules is another way to create alignment. Negative politics and silo-behavior may happen outside the project but within the team, we want people to act in the best interests of the project.

thanks Kiron, I understand that the need is to review & re-define performance evaluations criteria and ground rules and align these to project success.

I agree with Kiron. At the end of the day, we should also see that the project team is a stakeholder. If they have unmet needs and do not work in a single cause, ultimately everyone will push for their own agenda due to many reasons such as professional/cognitive bias and not to mention, among others, the individual's definition of sense of fulfillment.

That's an interesting situation, Asif. I find myself in a similar situation frequently because we're a weak matrix organization. My project teams can often get pulled away to work on other (in my opinion, less critical) tasks, leaving project work at risk. The way that I've found the most success in dealing with this situation is to go directly to the functional manager or director and explain the constraints that I have with the project to get them to buy-in to fully committing the resources we need to complete our project.

Direct approach is good, Matt but some people have hidden agendas, it is difficult to let them see, what we are looking at as project manager .

For me is simple to manager this type of situations. The project is to create a solution they need to achieve an organizational objective/goal. So, if they do not think that I help them to understand the reasons and I help them to go to their managers to find explanations or alignement. I put all clear at project kickoff no matter I worked before from the very moment I create the project stakeholder analysis.
