Ever since I got PMP certified in 2014, the total number of PMP holders has increased by 50%. How do you appraise the impact of this fact on the market value of PMP certification? Saving Changes...

Good marketing with focus on it is a way to get more money and job positions. Take a look to PMP distribution around the world. You will see zones where PMP rate is very low. That´s interesting. Saving Changes...
I would see this as the need for qualified project managers has increased as awareness of the approaches adopted by project managers has increased. This is apposed to PMI standards decreasing or a dumbing down of the requirements and assessment method in order to obtain a PMP. Also PMP certification has to be backed up by real life experience and PMP holders must be able to map this real life project management experience to the PMP exam. This is apposed to third level qualification that require a state exam and associated points system. Also not everybody who obtains a PMP qualification is a project manager or intends to use their knowledge in project management. There are examples of persons from the medical field, government officials and teachers who are qualified PMP holders but have applied the principles, approaches, tools and techniques of project management to their specific profession in order to become more efficient, aware and relevant in their day to day jobs. Gentlemen, I would like to first say that I have a lot of respect for those that have spent their $'s and time to get their certifications but I have found over the years, and I'm about to retire with 40 years as IT/CS PM, that the certifications have minimal effect on your career or the quality of the work you complete, which is up to you. I've worked for almost two dozen different organizations over the years as a contract PM and yes, they all advertised and ask if you have your PMP but when I've said no... they simply move on. I agree with Luis, the number of project managers globally far outweighs the number of PMP-holders. At the same time, I would suggest you get your PMP both to have a reference point for the rest of your career, you're going to need it, and to increase your ability to communicate what you wish to accomplish.

You make some very good points and while I agree with most of what you’ve mentioned, I believe these days with the rapidly evolving world, being certified in certain fields is an asset but I agree, it should not affect the quality of your work at all.
