Folks, I have just read Mark Perry's new book on PMO setup called "Business Driven PMO Setup: Practical Insights, Techniques, and Case Examples for Ensuring Success. It is a real page turner. I started reading on it two days ago. From the first paragraph of the Preface, I couldn't put it down. If you have enjoyed any of Mark's gantthead posts or his gantthead blog, PMO Setup T3, then you will really, really enjoy this book. The book consists of 13 chapters that cover topics and issues that all PMOs face, presenting solutions and practical insights and advice. This is not your typical PM book nor does it present the traditional and theoretical kinds of information. In fact, it directly challenges and calls into question various traditional approaches and strategies for the PMO citing examples and explaining why such academic and theoretical approaches are wrong. I found this to be a real eye-opener..! Each chapter starts with one of Mark's PMO cartoons and quickly gets into the meat of things. Also, this book has over 20 end of chapter contributor pieces by PMO managers and SMEs all over the world. Great touch..! This book is about 500 pages long, published by J. Ross Publishing, and is available at all of the usual places - Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, the publisher directly, etc.

Note to Mark: Congratulations. You clearly put a lot of work into this. This is by far and away the best book on PMO that I have ever read. Practical, insightful, challenging to the traditional thinking, amusing, rich in story, and of course Business Driven.

As one of the contributors to Mark's book, I am thrilled to see this review. My constant travel has prevented me from seeing my copy Mark sent me this week and I am looking forward to getting home to read it. I have to admit to my skepticism when Mark approached me with his novel and innovative approach to this book. Though I thought his idea was brilliant, I was worried it might be too ambitious and daunting to see to fruition. I was excited when Mark told me it was published and I am glad to see this positive review. I can't wait to read it.

Anne, so happy to hear you enjoyed Mark's book; I've watched his progress on this work from the onset and know how much energy he has put into making sure it was a unique offering that delivered real insights to the PMO community.

Corraling input from 20 independent contributors and structuring it such that it all flows as a single work is a high stakes challenge. The beauty is that when it comes out as well as Mark has crafted it, the different perspectives and writing styles make for a much more lively and diverse read. Bravo Mr. Perry, Bravo.

I'm holding an autographed copy right here in my hand. I've read nearly all of it and found it to be very very practical in a number of ways. So often, executives get handed the job of starting a PMO --- and that's the biggest challenge of all -- How do you get things set up to actually work? Mark has pulled together quite a group of experts here (nearly all ganttheads) who offer the benefit of their experience and as Anne mentioned - explain why many traditional approaches are just plain wrong.

Definitely worth the time and money for anyone setting up a PMO.

This book may the first of its kind, unique among PMO books because of the extent to which it emphasizes proven practices instead of theories. I particularly enjoyed the themes about inward versus constituent based PMO's, methodology versus process, culture based PMO implementation, servant leadership, and line of business PMO's versus pie-in-the-sky enterprise PMO's. Along these lines, the contributions from 20+ PMO veterans are truly unique.

I love the way that Mark doesn't pull any punches - - even when it comes to my special area of interest, i.e. OPM3. My own contribution to the book is about OPM3, and I was pleasantly surprised that the OPM3 case studies turned out to echo many of the non-OPM3 points made by the other contributing authors. I believe this was a result of different experts triangulating on common intersection points without planning or contriving this and despite the benefits of good editing.

This book is a must-read for anyone considering a PMO and anyone already involved in one. A real page turner.
