I have been in the telecom industry for ten plus years now as a residential field technician and for the last few years as a business technician. I've recently just been promoted to Project Coordinator/Manager and while having to do a lot of this in the field on large projects, I've never been involved from start to finish in this much detail. I was wondering if you all had any tips and tricks you implemented when you first started in this field as well as any advice on how to best obtain and use the info from this site to assist me as well. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the community.

Let me start first by saying that you are the right direction because the best step for something to new to project management to get their feet wet is to start as a Project Coordinator because you will get exposed to lots of PM Activities and you will learn most in my opinion. There are no tricks really than giving you an advise that this is your chance to learn as much as you can, it is not rocket science and I am sure you will excel in it given that you are in the same line of business and you have technical background.

There are no tricks around experience, just be patient and learn. One thing I would highly recommend for you is looking at doing the CAPM Certification as it will give you a solid knowledge background in project management while you are leaning how to implement it practically so in a a few years time this knowledge combined with the experience will be like reinforced concrete.

Hope this helps.

William,

If you are in the role of Project Coordinator, I would echo what Rami said above and take this opportunity to learn. One of the most important foundations for a project manager, I have found, is to understand the "why" behind what we do. It is easy to learn the day to day tasks that a given organization does in that role. However, to truly excel, you need to understand why those steps are done and what value they bring to the process.

Building on that, if you are in the role of a project manager, I would look for some online training or jump start books that can assist in laying that foundation. Starting in this role, you will need to pick up the day to day responsibilities asap while learning the "whys".

hope that helps

Hi William,

As you are a professional with more ten years experience its safe to assume that you already exposed to project management concepts in bits & pieces. If you are just looking for gaining knowledge on PMP concepts, I suggest you just go through the PMBOK 6 guide at least once. This will help you in understanding globally accepted project management concepts, project management terminology and in learning systematic approach of managing projects. Further, you may join the nearest chapter of PMI, USA in order to network with other project professionals and to learn on latest trends.

hope this helps..

cheers
