I mean that we can say that desktop based software is dead and we move into new era of SAAS (PAAS) solutions like different web based project software
And the second question is “What do you use for PM tools in your company? I mean is it combining functionality software like collaboration, file storage, etc and PM or is it only PM functionality software?
I am working on microsoft project 2007 and find it very useful for managing project schedule, resources, communicating project info and tracking project progress. Its user friendly and has different project management tools to organize projects effectively. I don't think it's fair to say any form of PM based tracking software is dead. Regardless of the gig I'm on, I'll still use Microsoft Project to make and manage my plans (lately OmniPlan since I switched to a Mac). I do that because I can do it offline without impacting anyone.
I use online project software more to communicate. My people make their updates, which I take offline so I can play around with impacts of the updates. I then turn around and update the online plan with my decisions.
And I *still* use Microsoft Excel when I want to do what-if scenarios, or present something from the plans during my stakeholder meetings, because I have more control over format.
I think web based project software has given us more options, but I don't believe it has to replace anything...it's just one more tool in the arsenal. Saving Changes...
