flagging in MSP

can someone tell me how to use flags or color codes in MSP to denote a specific criteria such as lagging, complete, or future and assign a corresponding color code to it. I have found ways to use flags but cannot get them to work.

Devin, can you elaborate a bit please.
1. Where do you want to see the flag or colour coding? e.g. on the gantt diagram or the data entry fields.
2. How have you tried to use flags (so I can understand why they are not working).

If you could specify an exact rule you want to implement then I'll try to assist.
