Hi Sante:
Hearty congratulations on considering publishing your first book!
This is an important question my spouse Sripriya and I had to consider when we published our first book, "Say YES to Project Success."
Each method has its own merits and demerits.
A. As a first-time author, self-publishing can get you to market far faster You will also have far higher control over content, and get a lion's share of the royalties from sales. However, this route will require some amount of investment and lots of personal marketing efforts to make it successful. You could self-publish with Amazon, or work with a self-publishing partner who take care of several aspects of publishing, including cover design, interior design, typesetting, advice on pricing, creating Kindle editions, placing your book on other platforms such as Google, Apple Appstore, etc.
B. Getting a well-known publisher to accept your book can give you and your book much more prestige, and reach, with not as much marketing efforts. However, it is very time-consuming, especially for a first-time author. The royalties paid to you will be minimal since your bargaining power is low at this point. Reporting of sales and royalties, plus tracking them is not easy.
C. In many cases, a first-time author may start with the self-publishing route. If the book is highly-rated and successful, it may become easier to convince a well-known publisher to now re-publish and market the book.
D. When I last checked, PMI informed me that they don't publish books by private individuals. You may want to check whether this has changed.
My spouse and I chose the self-publishing route after considerable anaysis, including a detailed multi-criterion decision-making framework. We've been very happy with the results.
However, your objectives and prioirities may be different from ours.
I will be very happy to assist you with responses to any other questions you may have. Saving Changes...
