Which one contributes more positively to your project success generally?
Keeping this as open-ended, love to hear your experience and insights!
Thank you in advance

First thing is to understand: is not my project. Second thing is to put clear the project objectives at the very begining becuase those are the meassures for project success, at least in the projects/programs where I am assigned to.

Dear Susi
Interesting your question

Thanks for sharing

How do you manage your projects?
Based on facts?
Or do you also listen to the noises?
Which is the most important in your decision making process?

Could you define what you mean by "Noises" as usually when we use the term "Signal:Noise Ratio", the second part of the ratio is a distractor at best and a blocker at worst?

Hi Kiron, thank you for pointing out, am trying understand from perspectives other than box standard/dictionary definition, both terms and usage can become subjective from one organisation to another. Just like what you mentioned, it would be very interesting if you can elaborate more of those usage/concepts with us here!
Thank you

I agree with Kiron. You need to clarify the question

Signal is the information we wish to receive. Noise is the background interference that gets in the way of the signal.

Unless a project is how to filter out noise, and can't see how it would ever be a benefit.

Thank you Keith, am with you, I value signal over noise. In other words signal=implicit input/instruction/direction whereas noises=gossips.

You are welcome. Just to comment, I am working in a large organization but if you ask me is not mature on project management. The point is: is dificult to find a place where needed authority is giving to the project manager. So, the project manager must get the authority by themself. How to do that? Helping all the stakeholders to understand the groundrules in the framework of defined project management process from the very begining. That´s will eliminate noise. For example, I saw lot of project objectives totally incorrect (for example, thanks´s the project we will grow 5% on market share this year"). If you accept that then you are lost from the first step. Is that behavor or way of working easy? Not at all. But in my case that keep me alive along the years.

I would say that a signal is more important but we cannot ignore the noise as it might sometime augment the signal, giving us more data to make a good decision.

If you have sufficient signals (facts), it is easy to be successful, we all strive for that.

Reality is though, that we need to make more decisions without sufficient facts, parameters are changing more quickly and change become more profound (disruptive). Call it VUCA, I call it insecurity.

This insecurity is earlier visible in the noise. In order to be successful you have to interpret the noise, which means sensing the project environment, engaging with stakeholders, adapting to changed parameters.
