I have used mind maps as a tool for organising work and presenting to colleagues - it takes time to set up but is an effective sharing tool particularly fora virtual team. I also use to make notes of presentations and capture thoughts, particularly if the subject is new and has many facets. The image then helps gather thoughts after the event to pick out the insights.

Dear Tim
Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your opinion.

When you use this tool with broken teams around the world do you build together with people or display the map?
Want to talk a little about your approach?

In fact, I replied to both of your questions in my response earlier:

Results: Good Collaboration + Helpful in Delivery Presentations

Difficulty: It can become cumbersome with much details on it and will be difficult to communicate a shared understanding.

Luis,

No, I have not stopped using this tool. Just use it less frequently in the last few months.

I use mindmaps to visualise WBS and dependencies for scheduling. I've had limited success in using it with teams mainly due to the lack of suitable display systems so the team can see the whole picture and lack of drag and drop (touch) on large screens (changes in technology mean I should probably try again).
Dear Ashleigh

Did you notice the approach Stéphane takes when using this tool?

Once done on paper and as a team you can create a computer prohrama

The big challenge is when we are working with teams around the world

I have used as a way of sharing and creating new content - my experience is to make small adjustments while sharing on line rather than do major editing as you lose people.

I use mindmaps (specifically, Xmind) for brainstorming and developing process. It is a very helpful tool to visualize flow, identify gaps to that flow as well as performing quantitative sizing (are we talking a Football Team or an Army?) There are many uses which have supported my success at the onset of stakeholder discussions, helping to firm up direction and agreement around scope. Check out some of the templates available. This should give you a taste for usability. Hope this helps!

Dear Luis,

Mind maps are good for brain storming in groups and working out peoples trail of thought. A good starting point to generate ideas about a new product/service, new target markets, new approaches to old problems and any other situation where you need group contribution to solve a problem. Also the mind map as an output can used as a basic project plan and approach for project management.

Dear Luis,

I started using mind maps for my Leaving Certificate English essays, when braining storming a topic under exam conditions. Additional points were awarded to people who used mind maps and were able to display how they put their thought into an essay format. Since then I used free hand thought bubble approach to mind maps and freeware digital application. But the underlining process and principle has changed very little following the format of "simple is better". The use of mind maps has been proven to solve complex problems using a trusted technique.
