Hi Luis,
I have used Freemind (a free tool) to generate simple mindmaps. The tool was useful as you could drag scope elements around the diagram hierarchy. Whats great about using a tool like this over a graphical diagramming tool like visio or draw.io is that it can be exported to MS project or ProjectLibra with a WBS code for each item.
I have used mindmapping tools on small projects where the scope was very new to the team.
Unfortunately if the project is large scale it is probably best to use a systems diagram or WBS list.
regards
Alan

Dear Alan
Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your opinion.
Have you tried using a freehand tool for large projects?

I've used mind maps to present Front End Planning requirements for projects. I have also seen mind map used to achieve team alignment to show and share project purpose and objectives. They are very helpful in virtual project situations and sharing over a web link.

Dear Luis,
Mind maps are good for brain storming in groups and working out peoples trail of thought. A good starting point to generate ideas about a new product/service, new target markets, new approaches to old problems and any other situation where you need group contribution to solve a problem. Also the mind map as an output can used as a basic project plan and approach for project management.

Luis
I have used free-hand as part of team discussion - for my own notes and sometimes on a board.
I have used a tool called mind-map but no longer have access to the tool to be able to share examples.
I use it a lot for brainstorming and organizing ideas.
I feel that when they get too big or the topic needs too much detail/information it gets difficult to make them as effective, so in this case I use them as a high-level approach (or on occasion break them into smaller dependent topics).

For someone willing to explore mind mapping a bit more, I suggest Tony Buzan's Mind Mapping Mastery, where you can learn some nice and easy techniques to make them even more effective.
Tony Buzan was the "father" of Mind Mapping and unfortunately passed away last year.

Dear John
Thanks for the precious reference to Tony Buzan and his famous book Mind Maps
I recently read a complimentary article on iMindMap4

Dear Luis,
I started using mind maps for my Leaving Certificate English essays, when braining storming a topic under exam conditions. Additional points were awarded to people who used mind maps and were able to display how they put their thought into an essay format. Since then I used free hand thought bubble approach to mind maps and freeware digital application. But the underlining process and principle has changed very little following the format of "simple is better". The use of mind maps has been proven to solve complex problems using a trusted technique.
