“Success has many parents, but failure is an orphan”. As project managers, change leaders and strategy executioners, progress resulting in success or failure is the combined effort of our sponsors, team members and stakeholders.
• Would you accept the praise for a project where one of your team members did most of the work?
• If yes, what about accepting a project management award for the project where one of your team members did most of the work?

Fairness & Honesty are the answers for your question... Leaders, despite their leadership styles, should be aware of treating people with honesty, which means recognizing the efforts of each and every team members in a fair way, otherwise, the leader will face a credibility issue, when dealing with the same people in the future projects.
@Gretta, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I was wondering if you could specifically address the second part of the question.

@Andre, I agree that each team member need to be recognized for the collective efforts - and holding the award proudly is a way of recognition of their contributions.
Thank you, Amany. HNY!

Adrian all I can say is that we should not teach the baker how to bake even if he /she wasted half of the flour .. so Sergio is well versed in football politics and knows the inside story I wouldn't argue with him on this.

jejeje. @Riyadh, you can argue without problem, obiously. I stoped due to I do not want to deviate the core of the discussion that is very interested for me. In the best english I can understand, praise mean to accept money. What futbol and other teams do is captain accept the money in the name of the whole team but it is distributed in the way that is previously agreed with all the team. Relating to project management I never live a situation like that because I always work in projects where if a price was giving at the end of the project the distribution between the team was agreed before the project started. In fact, in this situations I call "work at risk" I personally was assure to know and make all people know that is the situation we accepted before start working. Continue with "english", aware is not about to get money for the recognition. In this case, I accept the award but I assure that all the team is nominated when I went to get the award. In fact, in my actual work place, that is not needed because the company is aware on that and take care of this type of situations. At the end, the point is, in my personal opinion, the first step to "died" as project manager is not recognize to people that helped you in a project. If you do that, in the next, just in case you have to work with the same people, it wil be close to impossible. BUT unfortunatelly all these will depend on the culture of the organization. I can put here the list of some of well recognized, some of them between top 100 companies in the world, where this type of things are not part of their culture.

There are many aspect of a successful delivery of the project. The one that matters is not just the work done by an individual but also by the team but at the other aspect how those work have been managed through out the lifecycle of the project. For sure, the praise for the most work should be given to the one who contributed most, but at the same time, its always a team effort who encourages someone to contribute more than assigned. So, I think the praise must be given to the contributor but at the same time the team spirit and efforts must also be awarded...

Dear Adrian e Sergio
Can we compare the Project Manager to the captain of a football team?
It is a very interesting question that can open other debate about things like leadership. I have put that comparision trying to write about an example you can see by television for example. The captain received the award (the trophy) and then recieved the price (the money) in the name of the team but believe me that the original award will not be left to the captain hands including it the captain and the rest of the team received a replica and the money is distributed between the team as agreed previously. The problem is there are some of well known companies, some of them between the top 100 in the world, where this type of behavor (culture) is not following and it is perceived as not recommdable.

@Sergio, thank you for confirming my understanding that the PM is a representative of their team. Having said that, we also need to acknowledge that there are times where a PM chooses to nominate a representative from within the team (for various reasons).
Agree with you. I understood that your point in the question is about the price or award. Here comes where the organizational culture takes place. I can write here concrete examples. But my recommendation in this situations if somebody ask me that recommendation as a behavor I could push as a rule is: "take care of the steps of the stairs you go up because you will go down the same" as the wisdom said. And I recommed that not matter the organizational culture in place. If somedoby is living the situation where that behavor does not mach with the organizational culture then is time to decide to live the job. If not, the "mission, impossible" way of work will be faced.
