I heard and read this word being used differently from the proposal by its author Carol S. Dweck

What does Mindset mean to you?

To what extent can Project Manager Mindset affect project outcomes?

Can we change our Mindset?

I think our mindset can often largely be influenced by what is happening around you. For example if you are in a difficult situation in your personal life your general mindset will be affected by it. I have found in myself, when life pulls me down my mindset tends to be less positive. As & when I recognize this, then I start working on my general outlook on life, focusing on the positive things. This helps me getting back to my normal mindset and outlook on life.
Mindset and your project management style can and will directly affect each other. For example during times I am affected by the lows in life - like last year when I lost both a brother and my father within a very short time and lost my job as well, this did affect my ability to manage projects successfully for a time.
I think we need to really understand the influence our situation in life has on our ability to function. Using EQ we will then be able not only to help ourselves out of these situations, but also recognize them in others and help them too.

Luis,

My thoughts are akin to Ola’s, but I put together the following in summary:

I would define mindset as a “Philosophical viewpoint, that is, your way of thinking related to a given situation/task.” In the realm of project management, your mindset may need to be logged into the risk register if it’s driven by one’s emotions (i.e., what you feel). However, if one’s mindset is driven by challenge-based thought (i.e., reasoned thought), then successes door is always within reach.
Dear Gerorge

Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your opinion.

Interesting what you wrote: "Philosophical viewpoint, that is, your way of thinking related to a given situation/taskl"

Help me to understand. To you is Minset the same as Paradigm?

Mindset - Dictionary definition : a mental attitude or inclination or a fixed state of mind or the established set of attitudes held by someone.

So the success of the project does really depends on PM's attitude and views. And YES the attitude or mindset can always be changed though it is not very easy.....

The term Mindset means "mental model". That is nothing more than a way a person thinks. It is a configuration of your thoughts.

Carol Dweck's research found that under the mindset bias, people can be separated into two large groups:
- Fixed Mindset
- Growth mindset

Fixed Mindsed
-Intelligence is static
- Leads to a desire to look smart and therefore a tendency to:

* Challenges
Avoid challenges

* Obstacles
Give up easily

* Effort
See effort as fruitless or worth

* Criticism
Ignore useful feedback

*Success of the others
Feel threatened by the success of the others

As a result they may a plateau early and achieves less then their full potential
All this confirms a deterministic view of the world

Growth Mindset
- Intelligence can be developed
- Leads to a desire to learn and therefore a tendency to:

* Challenges
Embrace challenges

* Obstacles
Persist the face of setbacks

* Effort
See effort as a path to mastery

* Criticism
Learn from criticism

*Success of the others
Find lessons and inspiration in the success of the others

As a result they reach ever-higher levels of achievement
All this gives them a greater sense of free will

Luis, good question and I see you've got great feedback from all community, all I can add is that; it is not easy to change your mindset as all thoughts and believes developed from culture since you born the family fundamentals and the norm of the society you lived with the neighborhood all form certain believes and sometimes if you try to change you get a clash with your own self, your own principles, if you are in a state of affiliated you can not change your mindset to be in a state of non-affiliated this is in general however in a professional of leading a team try to see their culture and rule and adjust slightly with their mentality ( here you have to suppress your feeling/ your thinking) but if you know that you are going to spend more time with them then slowly educate them and if you have multicultural team then try to find common ground rules for all to follow. The best way is to have transparency and clearance in communication because having different mindsets in workforce place often leads to miscommunication

Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your opinion.

We agree that it is very important to accept and respect cultural differences.

Are Fixed Mindset or Growth Mindset Transverse to All Cultures?

Hi Luis,

i) Mindset is our outlook to life and its circumstances.

ii) A project manager has to juggle multiple projects. It is not always a smooth ride. So he/she has to have self-belief, confidence and a growth mindset. This helps the PM to take a step back and look at situations with a holistic frame of mind rather than having a clouded or narrow view of situations. With a growth mindset, the PM can then focus, take critical decisions and motivate the team to achieve the goals of the project Thus the mindset can affect the outcome of the project.

iii) Carol S Dweck's study on the mindset traits describes fixed mindset and growth mindset. I believe that for a change in mindset there has to be some catalyst such as a mentor or a coach. A person with a fixed mindset can be quite stubborn to change.

Dear Sajeev

We absolutely agree when you write: "So he / she has to have self-belief, confidence and a growth mindset. In your opinion, is a personal change plan and of course implementing it not enough to change?
