For ANY day to project , we can assess ,in which part of project life cycle our Project is passing through Or which knowledge area is key to successfully complete it.However can we use the Project management terminology in front of people who have no formal knowledge of PMBOK(R)?
I felt awkward when I discussed Risk Management with our Gardener while he was completing 4 hour project of mowing the lawn and planting new saplings.Any thoughts?

Irshad,

I believe that the PM skills and knowledge are universal and we can use them in our day to day life. But only caveat is that we need to talk in layman terms so that people can relate to the topic and understand easily. For example when I was talking to my kids about driving and traffic, I have used risk management techniques such as which one to accept or mitigate or transfer.

Key for each project manager is to find the way to communicate with people that must help her/him in achieving the project goals. So, as Feyman said If you really want to be sure of your understanding, run it past someone (ideally who knows little of the subject –or find that 12-year-old!). The ultimate test of your knowledge is your capacity to convey it to another. At least that is my way ot behave.

Irshad -

Just a physician wouldn't be perceived as having a good bedside manner if she or he uses complicated medical jargon with a patient or their family, in all professions there is a responsibility of encoding the message we wish to send in a manner which will increase the likelihood of comprehension by the recipient.

Anything else is noise.
