That's a good suggestion and it was proposed a few years back. However, I am not sure if you are aware but, the PMBOK has an extension called "The Construction Extension to the PMBOK" and it has 15 Knowledge Areas of which one of them (KA 14) is:
Project Health, Safety, Security and Evironmental (HSSE) Management
It goes into the details of HSSE Management on Projects. You can download this for free from PMI Website if you are a member. Check it out and let me know what you think or if you have any questions.

Mr. Salih and Mr. Kaibni bring out a good point, safety is a fundamental component to projects today.
I feel that a new 'Safety Knowledge area' should be added into the 7th edition of the PMBOK guide.
Does anyone else agree?
Not at all. Safety is a non-functional requirement that belongs to product and from it the project requirements will be defined then safety will be inherited. On the other hand, is not related to a project, is related to a organizational strategy whith assures the project/program/portfolio requirments includes it. Just in case there is something specific the project/program/portfolio management can complete PMI related approach with GPM. Saving Changes...
Sergio, even if it is non-functional
I still believe that safety is like any other subject needs training and awareness plus learning and certain projects would deal with more specialized safety requirements so all working team must be aware and trained enough to handle the requirements accordingly. Thank you

is not about what you think or I am thinking. Is about what it is in terms of business strategy and solution requirements which indeed must be aligned with business strategy. We can have different opinions but when we work as professionals inside an organization we need to be aligned to strategy of we need to leave the place.

You are welcome. Thank you for putting this on the table. In my case is good to work inside an organization where this is a strategic driver then we live this in action, not only words. But I have worked in other organizations and mainly it will vary depending on the place of the world where they are making business. Is this type of situations "good" or "bad"? I firmly believe that we need to put our personal opinions aside except to testify following a personal strategy if we want to face the fact of producing a change or directly do not work inside this organizations. There is some hypocrisy on this subject including the messages that come from the organizations that dictate the standards (I am not talking about you). The same with ethics. What about a program/project manager which is working in projects that help build weapons of mass destruction? What about safety, sustainability, ethic?. As far as I know I did not hear about a position on that matter. Please, is not about the person, each ones is free to work where each consider have to work.
