Is the project you are currently managing FABULOUS, FANTASTIC, SPECTACULAR, EXCITING (for yourself, for the team, for the customer) or is it a J.A.M.S.?

What does J.A.M.S. mean? Just Another Mediocre Success

Dear Rami
Thanks for your comment

If all the projects you manage are F.F.S.E. (acronym created by Salem) how can you understand J.A.M.S.?
Luis

Looks like my level of understanding and comprehension is not very high and intelligent enough for such a highly sophisticated and complex subject so I will excuse myself from this discussion thread.

Thank You !

Dear Rami
Thanks for your comment

Interestingly I consider you as an intelligent and high level person of understanding and comprehension

In addition, I also consider you to be a person with a high level of information and knowledge.

Therefore there can only be one failure in the communication process

As the responsibility of communication lies with the issuer (in this situation of mine):
- I apologize for this communication failure
- What can I do to make the concept of J.A.M.S. (Just Another Mediocre Success) can be analyzed by us until we are in perfect tune?

Dear Luis,
I think no project in this word is perfect, there are many issues and as PM our role is to get things done with minimum of issues.
In my opinion the best way is to influence people, we need to advertise best practices in the mind of people to get the results expected.
My last experience was in the worst project in the word ( what people think) but for me was the best one, best challenge, what I can say everything was wrong from the beginning, we end up by a nice start-up which most of people didn't believe ttill now, it was not easy but we did our best to change, influencing people,
FYI I left this project last week convainced that I complet my mission with sucess
for me : J.A.M.S. is the best challenge to take
best regards
Hamid

Dear Abdelhamid
Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your opinion.

I am convinced that you will soon have the opportunity to participate in a F.F.S.E (FABULOUS, FANTASTIC, SPECTACULAR, EXCITING) project.

What can you do to make it so?

It is easy to get caught up 'in the moment' ,'limelight' and 'centre of attention' when a project turns out to be an overwhelming success but again a project managers show their true worth when a project goes off track and has the depth of skills in order to bring it back from the brink. If a project starts to feel routine and going through the motions, then maybe it time to up our game and either look for more responsibilities in our current role or find a more challenging project environment in order to test ourselves. The only people we need to please is not ourselves but the people employing us and paying our salaries. So before we start with the back slaps and pats on our back, just remember we are only as good as our last game and the next one could be our ultimate test.

Luis -

In organizations where the prevailing culture reflects low psychological safety, folks will value short-term personal safety over long-term considerations. In such cases, projects which should have been called out as failures and not worth continuing to invest in will continue to be funded well past their "due date".

The only J.A.M.S project I have been involved in is getting dressed in the morning. Is it a project? It has a beginning, an end and has to be sequenced to succeed.
Some have equated perfection with F.F.S.E which misses the point. Perfection can be boring.
I see Fabulous in the people; Fantastic in the solution to difficult problems; Spectacular in the team coming together; Exciting in getting things done that seemed impossible. Most likely not all on the same project but various combinations. I have had projects that met or exceeded all expectations, projects that have met most expectations, projects that have met some expectations and projects that have just scraped through. None perfect, none boring, all with F.F.S.E. elements.
Second thoughts - some
Regrets - minimal

One of the challenges for a project manager is to manage expectations. This is an ongoing effort to ensure all stakeholders: owner, users, team members, etc., recognize what the end result will be before we get there. There should be no disappointments or unsatisfied needs at the end although the end may not be exactly as initially anticipated. We typically do surveys during project implementation as well as on completion. The 'during surveys' allow us to adjust on the fly, the 'completion surveys' are used in lessons learned. We aim for perfection but typically settle for Good' to 'Very Good'. Always room for improvement.
