Is there any value added to having both the CAPM and the PMP Certifications?

David,

Here are few scenarios:

1- If you already have a PMP, there is no reall value in getting the CAPM. More or less its the same material, the only different is the CAPM is purely knowledge based while PMP is heavily experience based.

2- If you don't have enough experience to qualify for the PMP then doing the CAPM first then followed by PMP makes sense.

3- If you already have the CAPM and planning to do the PMP, there is value for sure, in terms of your professional profile.

I did a recent poll around the same subject, and you can see the feedback in the comments in the link below:

Hope this helps.

In my opinion, after you have the PMP you should probably let your CAPM lapse. I had this predicament and the PMP basically shows the competence of the CAPM + some.

Dear David
Interesting your question
Thanks for sharing

If you do not meet the requirements to take the PMP certification exam, it makes sense for me to have CAPM certification in order to have the PMP certification.

If you meet the requirements to apply for the PMP certification exam, taking the CAPM exam is the same as washing your legs before taking a shower.

I agree with Luis, if you have met the PMP requirements then there little to no value in having the CAPM

If you have the CAPM, meet the requirements for the PMP, do I wait until its closer to expiration to take the PMP or just go ahead and take it now? My CAPM is good thru June 2023.

I don't see a reason why you should wait. If you qualify then do it now especially that the exam is changing in June 2020.

Monica,

I would get the PMP sooner, the CAPM exam preparation is fresher and the PMP exam will evolve.

Do we know the current exam is "easier" than the post-June 2020 exam?

I was in the same boat. I was initially just going to do the CAPM then got myself siked up to do both the CAPM and PMP, then when I went to do the application for the PMP realized I would not meet the experience requirements. However, I have everything I need for the CAPM. Plus, I feel more confident in beginning with the CAPM then building my profile from there. Hope that helps.
Like others said here, CAPM is a great option if you don't have the experience to sit for the PMP. I have seen it listed in some job requirements (although PMP is still the gold standard). It can likely help you land the job to get you the extra experience to sit for the PMP.

Honestly, once though you have enough experience to sit for the PMP do it and let the CAPM lapse, because no one will expect you to keep that current if you already have a PMP.

Thanks for replying. This question is now old business. I’m happy to announce that I have passed the PMP back on Feb 11th this year.
