Hello Ioana,

I guess PMI has OPM3 product suite which also include software tools! Try that.

This is a tricky question because we haven't addressed the business process or support functions the PMO will provide. Rather than seeking a specific tool, have you identified your organization's key PMO processes?

You may find this article useful.
Form and Function of a PMO

Once you have the processes defined, you'll be in a better position to evaluate tools across all you portfolio management needs. You may find you just need a simple decision making matrix instead of the latest cutting edge technology platform.

Thanks!

It depends what you want to manage.

Do you want to manage the approvals of new projects, do you want to re-prioritise the projects so you can slim down a portfolio, do you want control the resources on the portfolio?

Depending on the answer to these questions will guide you to the software you need to manage your portfoilio.

I agree with Andrew that you need to look at your business processes first before you look at the technology that can support your processes. You also need to consider who will be running with the tool. Is this a one person setup as a high level view, or are you looking at putting a tool on everyones desktop and expecting full updates of progress information and detailed analysis on task level activities?
The more people you expect to use the tool, the more training will be required, and the more you will need to consider data accuracy. Also in my experience the longer it will take to get a result.

Start simple, and then you can expand when required.

I also wanted to mention Mark Perry's new book on building a business driven PMO as it approaches processes and tools.

I've been enjoying the book so far!

You can also reach out to Mark as he is on Gantthead

Hope that helps!

Ioana, great post. PPM and IT Governance software is getting better and better. Have you read the recent Gartner Group Magic Quadrant Report for IT and Project Portfolio Management (PPM)..? This report provides excellent analysis and commentary for the question you just asked. And, thanks to Compuware, this report is available to all from their website. Just go to their site at www.compuware.com and click on Analyst Reports. All of these software providers in this report have significant thought, market, and product leadership. It would be well worth anyone's time to have a chat with these folks. Good luck..!

Hi Ioana,
You don't say what you want to manage. We are currently implementing Planview as we required not only Program and Project management but also the Portfolio Management functionality and alignment to strategy which Planview does very well.

When you look at this level of functionality you are really at the top end of the tools, HPPM, Primavera, etc. We found Planview to be the most cost effective solution and for a quick implementation they provide a hosted SaaS option.

Have a look at Gartner's magic quadrant for project management tools as a good guide.
