Is actively participating in ProjectManagement.com considered to be voluntary by PMI?

When we participate in activities developed by PMI chapters we receive, at the end of each year, a certificate of volunteer

But for this to happen (get the certificate) the chapter has to create a V.R.M.S.

What is the process here at ProjectManagement.com?

Dear João
Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your opinion.

"Thanks for sharing" assumes that a person reads what has been written and, in my opinion, writing a review can act as a support and incentive for the writer.

That is, it took a certain amount of time and effort to read and write

How many people volunteer at the chapters and their activities are limited to welcoming guests to events, or preparing the cofee break and receiving the volunteer certificate?
Hi Luís,

I agree with on "Thanks for sharing" being an incentive to the writer. I was not diminishing the value of the acknowledgement towards the writer, but stating that just by itself shouldn't be considered volunteering. Great content, constructive feedback, posing clever (and sometimes daring) questions definitely is giving back to the community and can be considered volunteering within this community.

Providing a more blunt example of my view: your participation in this community and mine:
* Your contributions are highly valuable towards growing the community and it's knowledge and the wealth of experience shared is huge. To ignite these passionate discussions/conversations, I'm sure it demands time and effort. Summing all up, I consider you a great volunteer and an example to us all.
* Although I consult this community's posts and content regularly, my contributions are a lot more scarce than yours. Although they might be important (no self indulgence here), I don't believe I should be considered a volunteer, but an active and contributing member.

The question remains, where do your draw the line? :)

Regarding the example you provided, that decision is usually taken by the chapter's leadership based on the individual's contribution towards a specific chapter objective in a certain time length. Sometimes being a responsible and consistent enabler of something is very important and not that easy to find :)

Thanks, my friend!

Dear João
Thank you for your opinion

All of us who are most directly involved with the chapters know the importance of having people involved in supporting the events.

In most chapters, despite personal contact, all volunteers are formally recruited through the V.R.M.S.

Two questions:
1. Would issuing a PMI certificate of volunteer contribute to more people actively participating in ProjectManagement.com?
2. What can be considered to actively participate in ProjectManagement.com?

Certain activities such as writing an article (not a discussion thread) or creating and presenting a webinar would certainly be eligible but general community participation would be difficult to quantify or substantiate and likely would fall under the same sub-category as working as a practitioner.

Dear Kiron
Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your opinion.

All activities in the chapters are carried out by volunteers.

These activities can be Directorate (Presidende and VP's), Board support, Project Managers or project team members.

All persons involved in these activities are recognized by PMI with a voluntary certificate.

Can we consider posting topics for reflection and debate as creating content and contributing to learning?

I think they are, but how would you substantiate an estimate for how many hours were spent on actual creation of content & contribution vs. just providing an opinion? Not ever discussion thread or the comments within it would be eligible.

I just feel that you'd be setting yourself up for a challenge on the submission...

PDU's can be claimed for content contributions such as blogs, webinars, articles, and templates under Create Content.

Volunteering is specific to other activities identified in the VRMS, such as activities through a Chapter.

There is an explicit distinction b/t Creating Content (as identified above) and Volunteering under Earn PDU's on PMI's website.

Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your opinion.

When I created this topic (as that subject is perfectly clear) it was not to reflect on PDU's

This topic is about PMI recognition as a volunteer for participating in ProjectManagement.com

Dear Kiron
Thanks for your feedback

Do you remember a reflection about participating in this community and how to involve more people?

Would PMI's recognition as a volunteer increase this participation in ProjectManagement.com?

In the last 3 years I received the volunteer certificate issued by PMI.

If you look at my profile, you'll have the opportunity to see that I've been involved as a PMI volunteer for the last 2 years.

I didn't volunteer anymore because I didn't have the opportunity
(Lack of time)

I assure you that invitations have not been missed :-)

I'd settle for PMI being specific about what they are recognizing individual volunteers for. Someone might have volunteered once a year for an event of a day or two and got the same level of recognition as one who has spent hundreds of hours doing so.

Dear Kiron
Thank you for your opinion

I suppose you participate in this community on a voluntary basis.

Your input is awesome on the forum (Q&A), blog and video production

Sure you devote a lot of time to this community

Did PMI recognize your participation by awarding you a certificate of volunteer?

A person who supports the Conference Project Manager in Chapter (2 days) is recognized by PMI.
The only criterion for this to happen is that chapter creates a VRMS
And the chapters issue the VRMS

While formal recognition is nice, I'm fine with the informal recognition I get from the community members and engagement specialists.

Elevating my profile and brand is way more valuable to me than a "special" certificate (although some PMI swag is always nice :-) ).
