Dear Azrul
Interesting your question
Thanks for sharing

Do they (in these large companies you cite) know that PMIS exists and that they can track project developments online?

They knew about it Luis, but they have manually operated more than 10 years using manual and refuse to change to new era where else the transformation can give a huge OPEX impact saving for example in terms looking at resource optimization exercise.

PMIS are information technology tools that need a process of implementación. Sometimes it hasn't been introduced in an enterprise because of resistence to change. Some companies have both methods, or introduce PMIS paulately.

Thanks for your feedback. Like the statement of refuse to change. Likely most of them are having the same situation.. is there any suggestion or ideas from the committee to have a quick transformation?

The advantages are fairly well understood in terms of reduction of manual effort, consistency of presentation and reporting and so on.

The disadvantages include:

+ Total cost of ownership
+ Garbage in, garbage out both in terms of accuracy and currency of data
+ Lack of customization to fit reporting needs of different stakeholders

Setting up a PMIS is easy. Getting consistent, quality data out of it such that it supports decision making while not being administratively onerous is the hard part.

I worked for a PPM solution vendor for six years so I well know the good & the bad of EPM/PPM tooling...

PMIS can help with planning and save a fortune by optimization of project schedules and budgets.
Tracking is next feature and it is strange to me that discussing tracking nobody mentioned planning.

I think Kiron nailed it. We are using a heavily modified version of SAP, and have just started using their Project System (PS) module in more detail. Management is beginning to run their own reports on projects, which is good and bad. The good, is that they have information at their fingers tips, which is excellent when our organization has hundreds of projects. The bad, there is a lot of bad information being extracted, or information extracted from the incorrect fields, leading to erroneous results/ information. I won't even get into the cost, but you can imagine it was in the 100's of millions!

PMIS is a system, not a software system. Because of that you have to define the process, the method and tools to support it. All these stuff can be automathyzed or not. Key is: when you will introduce something into an organization is to solve a problem. The way the problem is solved is up to each organization situation.
