Hello George: We each have our own unique qualities to add flavor to project management. In my personal opinion, the essential qualities of a project manager would be keen written and verbal communication, excellent understanding of PM processes and principles, integrity, honed exemplary leadership skills, gifted at listening and teambuilding by inspiration. Qualities are different than competencies. Things like openness, empathy, and an analytical leaning come to mind...

Dear kiron I learned that competence is the sum of "Ability" + "Knowledge" ( Knowledge is at the level of knowing and knowing how to do)+ "Attitude" What is your concept?

I like that definition of competency and it supports my position that qualities are complementary to competencies...

Hi George,
You have posted a very interesting question that will surely give us all different insights.
In my experience, the qualities required might also be different from organisation to organisation. In my organisation it’s very helpful for a project manager to have the ability to translate the technical aspects to business and vice versa as we mostly double up as PMs and BAs.
One very essential quality as a PM is that you should be willing to learn.
