EPMO maturity assessment

Does anyone have experience doing/taking an EPMO or Program Management maturity assessment? I have done one in the past for a PMO, but when searching I cannot seem to find an EPMO specific assessment.

We are moving from an IT PMO to a EPMO and transitioning from a focus on project management to program management. I would like to develop a road map on where we should focus and base it off of industry recommendations.

Regarding programs:
PMI's OPM3 had some core capabilities defined for programs (and portfolio mgmt).
IPMA's OCB feeding into their Delta Assessment might be another source.
P3M3 and 7-keys (IBM) are other proprietary models.

I used OPM3 and 7-key and found the latter more flexible and appropriate.

Gets harder for PMOs since there is no standard and even the implementation scope range is huge (I would look at a PMO as a program: what are the benefits?)

My recommendation is using the CMMi maturity assessment process. Just to comment I was part of the group of authors of OPM3 but I do not use it becuase in my humble opinion it is incomplete.

Christopher -

A lot depends on the mandate for the EPMO. If it is purely a CoE with no "directive" role then you'd assess it differently than if it has a delivery oversight responsibility.

It is important though to identify an appropriate maturity target for the EPMO - just because some other organization is at a much higher level doesn't mean that is the right target for your organization. Context counts!

CEB would be a good place to check - they have a ton of useful resources on PM/PMO competency so hopefully your company subscribes to their services.

CEB used to be an independent industry analyst service company but appears to have been taken over by Gartner. As such, if you are a Gartner customer then you would have access to their resources.

Ahmed,

yes, I bought OPM3 around 2004/5 and it included online access to these artifacts. In the meantime OPM3 is no longer supported and updated by PMI (except the standard). So I doubt if artifacts designed 20 years ago still are helpful, complete or relevant today.

yes i sow several "angry" comments about the PMI's withdrawal of these directories, I only assume PMI has good reasons for doing so. however, if you still possess such "artifacts" would you mind sharing them, they will sure help many out there, regardless being outdated.

They are not available in a easily digestible format like excel.

But the main thing is that I signed not to share them.
