Hi All,

Halo-Effect: Generalization from the perception of one outstanding personality trait to an overly favorable evaluation of the whole personality.

A person is great in one role, does not mean they will be equally great in anther role, such as being project manager.

“halo effect” has a negative and “devilish” result - What is your findings on that? Is it true?

Thanks,
Rajon

Dear Rajon
Interesting your question
Thanks for sharing

Usually the result of halo effect when not taken into account is perverse (for the person and the organization)

Halo-Effect is just another natural way our brain is working, automatic and unconscious judgement and decision making, a bias, fast and efficient, what Kahnemann called System 1. It is necessary to survive and not bad at all.
There are many other cognitive biases, see wikipedia for example.

Emotional Intelligence's self-awareness includes to know about the biases, identify when you fall to them and recognize if you better counter them (with your System 2 thinking).

Emotional Intelligence's self-control is then controlling your biases and feelings.

As a project manager, who is asked to make decisions for others, you grow and mature as you work on both self-awareness and -control. It never ends.

Reality kill the halo effect. Always. The problem is when those persons are part of "the matrix" the organization created by strategy where they are needed.

Dear Sergio
It is true

On the other hand, "while the cock comes and goes, they loosen their backs"

How many times has the halo effect "killed" companies?

Rajon -

a very common example of the halo effect is what happens when leaders take someone who has been a great technical contributor and promote them assuming that they will become a great PM or technical lead without assessing their fit for the different responsibilities of the higher role.

Rajon,

We are always confronted with a halo effect and other biases. It is important to recognize them. That is the only way to reduce or eliminate the impact.
