I'm now into year 3 of an "agile" project. How do you report progress for a multiple Scrum teams project?

Well you said a few thing here that are a bit anti patterns, even though we've all been there. Agile Projects, try to move your orgs toward a Product Management approach, product teams prove much great productivity vs project teams. Reporting status should done at the Demo level, here's what we did and here's where we are headed, though sometimes there are those who think they need a status report, try to break this archaic way of thinking, show software, show results of the recent software deployments achievements and successes. Roadmap reviews can take the conversation up a level and out of the stories and more at the feature and release level, discussing both what has been delivered and what's upcoming. I hope that helps.

Not sure I agree with you on everything that you’ve mentioned and this doesn’t mean you’re wrong, but I have a different point of view.

Where does information radiators come in play ? Aren’t burn down, burn up chats and Kanban Boards a way to continuously make status and progress visible to everyone ?

At demo level, you review the increment !

On another note, Agile Projects doesn’t really move your org towards product management approach but rather to an Integrated Project Management approach to improve value delivery be it for a product, service or project.

Why? I think in a community where PM's, which I used to be a consulting PM and Program Manager for 10 years, are looking for the improving their agile skills to stay competitive, I'd say this is the perfect forum. Unless it's against the rules. Mentor ship is free regardless of if you buy training or consulting services.

It is somehow against the rules and maybe Heather can weigh-in on this. Offering free mentorship is totally fine and a noble way to give back to the profession but promoting your business, as far as I know, is not allowed here but I might be wrong.

I am indifferent, I believe this community is for everyone and I see your point of view behind this post, I hear you.

My take on trying to make your agile teams operate to make the reports fill out correctly is a bad practice. I don't care about velocity or burn ups or task reports. We drive for value to customers incrementally. Demo's are the increment, what is your point? that is the best status of all. We did x this sprint, show it thoroughly and say next sprint we are going to work on finishing X and starting Y. It's a very good flow of info. Agile projects we agreed! agile project do NOT move you toward Product Development, it's what successful companies do, resourcing projects by initiative and horse trading people is HUGELY inefficient. thanks for the comments (-;

Jim -

I think you'll find a reasonable number of experienced agilists on this site who have worked in different industries with different scales of clients to transform their delivery approaches.

While there are multiple benefits of product-centric delivery, most companies will still find they will have a hybrid of some product-centric value streams and others which remain project-based.

I'd also suggest that there is a context for every practice. What you characterize as a good or bad practice might be the opposite in a different context.

That's what I love about the DA toolkit - it provides optionality for multiple different contexts.
