When do you hear about project management quality that you think about?

Quality Management Processes?

Products, services and / or results according to customer requirements?

Very good question Luis,

I would say both and more, I repeat myself I should see the quality in project management more as a process than as an outcome or as a metric only, but often that's not so plain and easy.

Surely quality can measured, but it's also a delicate balance between the final stakeholders perception and the best PM procedures, in a sense it requires some experience (and some long-term vision too) to weight how much and how to being flexible is proficient or efficient against the mere quality management procedures.

When I think of Quality with regards to projects , I think in terms of

1) Quality of the Project Artifacts themselves and the processes undertaken to produce them - Requirements , Project Plan , Solution Architecture, Testing and Quality Documentation.

2) Quality of the Project's Product which you ensure through Appropriate Testing - Write your test plan, test scripts and acceptance criteria to test the Product's functional and non-functional requirements , Execute the test cases based on those requirements and make sure that you resolve the high severity defects that you find during your testing before product release.

Dear Deepesh
Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your opinion.

If I understand correctly, you think about quality management processes.

In your opinion, if the processes are well designed and implemented, the product and / or service meets customer requirements, is that it?

Dear Luis,

When I think quality I think, Is this what the customer asked for or is this our own interpretation of what the customer asked for. Many times I have seen where a customer has one vision and the end result does not meet this vision. Some project managers may say it because of scope or requirement gathering but in reality in goes back to the level of quality of work that is been carried out by the project team. Quality is not only about the finished product or service but also the consistency of quality delivered by the project team throughout the life cycle of a project. This metric is difficult to ascertain and many tools and techniques can be used to measure quality but only give a broad scope of what it could be. Using Industry standard accreditation or processes does not guarantee quality in delivery.

Quality is beyond the life cycle of a project .Quality MUST look at the product life cycle i.e. the time when you want to deal with operation, whether you have encountered an issue or want to make an improvement. Any artifacts from project and the way we transit the deliverable to the customer is what quality should pay attention besides a proper product which satisfy customer.Satisfaction is brought by a well-defined scope ,a proper methodology, timely fashion interim deliverable and all aspects which help customer knows he/she needs. All these are what quality covers.

I've given some thought to this and see it at two levels.

The first of course is the project deliverable and the project management role in achieving that deliverable compliant with the quality requirements.

The second, and the one I'll focus on here, is the quality management of the project management effort. First we have to establish the project management deliverables (NOT project deliverables) and the measure of quality for each of those deliverables.

As an example one of the significant requirements of project management is communications. What is an acceptable level of communications and how do we measure it? What do we compare against? What are the quality control and quality assurance processes for communications and how well did they stand up?

Other examples would be documentation - project plans including the management plan, cost plan, schedule, quality, commissioning, close-out, updates and revisions, etc.Same questions as communications above. From a QC/QA perspective the quality plan may include peer reviews, independent third party reviews of significant documents, recipient comments and responses to comments.

Typically one tends to consider the project deliverable when asked the quality management question. However, my first thought was the quality management of the service.

Back to your question: A quality management process enhances the probability that the final deliverable will achieve the required quality. The quality management process includes for product quality validation through testing and measurement.
