I am thinking of making a career switch from meeting planning to project management. Would anyone mind walking me through what a typical day or week looks like for you? Thanks!

There really is no "typical" day, Laura as it depends on the volume of concurrent projects the PM is managing as well as where those projects are in their life cycles.

You'd be better of looking at frequently performed activities and most of those are communications-based: meetings, facilitating workshops, stakeholder engagement and so on.

Makes sense, thanks Kiron! What is an example of a workshop that you would facilitate?

A PM might facilitate many types of workshops including:
+ Having the team build the WBS for the project
+ Developing a network diagram
+ Identifying and assessing risks
+ Analyzing a change request

I have another question. The best place to start in the field would be a certification right? Is there one in particular you recommend?

I have looked at the PMP, but I am not sure if my experience as a meeting planner would be considered relatable enough to count as project management experience (i.e. could planning a conference count, or does the project need to be completed with a PM mindset?). I've also looked at Certified Scrum Master.

Certification is there to complement experience, not replace it. I would suggest focusing on getting some meaningful hands-on PM experience first before looking at any certifications.

Thanks Luis, and good point! My current role involves a lot of skills that seem to fit well with the project management field. I currently work on a small team in running 8 large professional conferences each year, so I coordinate often between my team and other teams at my organization (as well as volunteers and other vendors) to make everything happen. I'm detail-oriented and enjoy working with people.
I am looking to switch because the project management field appears to be more wide-reaching. Also, while there are plenty of meeting planning positions out there, a lot are centralized in Washington, DC and I would like to have the flexibility to move elsewhere if I would like to.

Thanks Kiron. Do you have a recommendation on how to do that? To be honest, this seems a bit of a Catch 22 to me - "how do you get meaningful PM experience when you don't have much to begin with?"

That said, I believe I do already have some PM experience, since I currently plan large meetings, however, I am not familiar with the standard operating procedures of a PM. This is why I thought a certification might be helpful.

Welcome to the community.

The reason I love Project Management is because everyday is almost a different day from meetings, learning, projects, discussions, networking so there is not typical day per say as it could be a mix of any of the above.

Laura - Welcome!

I’ve had many days where I spend the day walking around, talking with teams, individuals, etc. Then ‘do my work’ later. Then some days I have more ‘free’ time to catch up on other items.

What I really love is the human aspect. Those conversations and helping others to not just meet their goal, but understand what’s happening. I appreciated the opportunity to work with the teams and empower them to be confident and successful in their role and in the team. Certainly, lots of tactical efforts too, just highlighting the other aspects. And I appreciate those needs as well.

Probably how I ended up in a coaching role :)
