New to PM: What does a typical day look like for you?

A PM might facilitate many types of workshops including:
+ Having the team build the WBS for the project
+ Developing a network diagram
+ Identifying and assessing risks
+ Analyzing a change request

Certification is there to complement experience, not replace it. I would suggest focusing on getting some meaningful hands-on PM experience first before looking at any certifications.

Thanks Luis, and good point! My current role involves a lot of skills that seem to fit well with the project management field. I currently work on a small team in running 8 large professional conferences each year, so I coordinate often between my team and other teams at my organization (as well as volunteers and other vendors) to make everything happen. I'm detail-oriented and enjoy working with people.
I am looking to switch because the project management field appears to be more wide-reaching. Also, while there are plenty of meeting planning positions out there, a lot are centralized in Washington, DC and I would like to have the flexibility to move elsewhere if I would like to.

Thanks Kiron. Do you have a recommendation on how to do that? To be honest, this seems a bit of a Catch 22 to me - "how do you get meaningful PM experience when you don't have much to begin with?"

That said, I believe I do already have some PM experience, since I currently plan large meetings, however, I am not familiar with the standard operating procedures of a PM. This is why I thought a certification might be helpful.
