Dear Alice
Interesting your question
Thanks for sharing

External environment analysis or PESTEL Analysis

Analysis of the internal environment The 7's model is particularly useful when identifying internal factors in your business

Identification of the main threats and opportunities or SWOT analysis

You can use other models for diagnosing the situation (complementary to the SWOT analysis)
BCG Matrix
GE / McKinsey Headquarters
Porter's Five Forces

After carrying out the situation analysis it is important to start the strategic formulation
- Mission (Purpose, Values, Strategy: Distinctive competence and competitive advantage, Standards and behaviors)
Goals and objectives and business plan (portfolio)

Alice,

I think that Luís as an expert in strategic planning as suggested a basket of tools sufficient enough to perform a good strategic plan.

The only thing I can add is to associate a GUT Matrix to the SWOT Matrix, the combination of this information allow you to compile favorability index.

At its highest level, a strategic plan needs to spell out what the organization will and will not do.

Strategic about what? You need to undertand what strategy meant (just in case you pay no attention to that). Strategy is the way the organizational component will answer to the environment to achieve the minimal objectives: survive, growth and develop. So, first thing to do, is to stay clear about the environment. With that on hand you need to define or taken into account the structure that will ask environmental stimuli and to define the functions/process that will do that. All these are the source for the strategic plan that can be writen with no more than one or two page extension.

Strategic plans focus on the endstate the strategy is meant to achieve, the proposed manner of achieving the endstate and the resources available to enable the execution of the plan. Ends, ways and means.
An interesting topic. Roughly speaking, the strategic plan gives you a place to record your mission, vision, and values, as well as your long-term goals and the action plans you’ll use to reach them. It has some basic elements such as Mission Statement, Vision Statement, SWOT Analysis, etc. There is a good article regarding the basic elements of a strategic plan here you can read https://www.projectcubicle.com/strategic-p...strategic-plan/

Dear Alice,

I would concur with my fellow colleague about the content of a strategic plan but bear in mind the intended audience of the strategic plan and how they would like the information presented, its content and for what purpose.

A requirements gathering exercise from the intended audience, there role, responsibilities and their job title will give you a better insight into what the strategic plan must contain and how it should be presented.

For example if you are asked by the CFO for a strategic plan this would have a different approach, content and conclusion then if the CEO asked you for a strategic plan.

The basic should included a summary for the reasons for the strategic plan, who its for, who is on the distribution list, organisation overview, technical information, references and the tools and techniques that you are using to gather and analyse the information.
