What does the 90/10 Principle mean to you?

Can we apply this Principle to Project Management?

Hi Luis,

Once again Stephen Covey rules you life :)
You can't control 10% of happens to you but you can decide how to react to the others 90%.
I am not so sure if the numbers in the rule are so exact as the environment, the area of activity and projects can be so differents. However is not less true we have the power to decide how we react to the others, so you can choose not be one bored , hungry etc.. and with that reduce the stress.
But for most of us this is easy to say then done, so we must train, our ADN, personalities, our intints a lot of times overcome the reason.

Dear Alexandre
Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your opinion

If this Principle applies to our lives, is there any reason why projects and project management are not covered by it?

This principle aligns well with that old quote "You can't control other people. You can only control your reactions to them."

PMs, especially those who work in functional, weak or balanced matrix situations, are sometimes prone to take a "woe is me" attitude towards the various challenges they encounter. The good ones are able to recognize that perspective and attitude goes a long way towards being able to overcome these challenges.

Hi,
The thing is, we can’t control only 10% of events in our lives and we can control our own reaction to such things.
The other 90% of events are the result of our reactions — to put it simply, what we do when we’re stressed out.

To add further, I would like to highlight the project manager role and effort in project communication. Almost 90% time project manager invest in interacting with stakeholders and project success is dependent on how we react during these interaction. Hence 90/10 rule is very relevant for project manager. To succeed, project manager should have emotional intelligence to react effectively during discussion with stakeholders with different mindset and attitude. Thank you Luis for great question.
