Hi Everyone,

I am running for a new PM position and the projects to develope are within the IT Infrastructure area, although this was a usual work stream in the projects I managed, I wasn't managing a entire project just in Infrastructure therefore I would like to hear from you guys what would you say are common and specific risks and constraints to this kind of project, any advice and if anyone have a project schedule/WBS that can share to give me and idea of the tasks included in the project.

Many thanks!
Regards,
Maribel.

Dear Maribel,

When you say IT infrastructure you could mean a lot of different aspects to IT infrastructure and accordingly the many different roles, responsibilities, type of suppliers and expect due date if you are talking about building and managing data centres. A lot of recent IT infrastrcture spending has been around managed/colocation date centres where before it was about putting fibre in the ground. Can you be more specific about where your budget allocation for IT infrastruncture is being focused on and your medium to long term IT strategy, This will have a huge bearing on task, deliverables and resources that are required.

Hi Daire,
Many thanks for your response, unfortunately I do not know exactly the types of projects I could be assigned to work on (I imagine different types) since this is a position for which recruiting process I am participating, so I wanted to get some insides before my next interview, I do understand my question needs to be a bit more specific although at this stage is not possible.
Regards,
Maribel.

Maribel.

Hello,

I have been working in the IT industry and just recently became the Companies PM. Many of the Constraints I have experience is Scope and Scope Creep as many of the techs are Support Techs and project team members. Also the Compatibility as already mention, if you are taking Infrastructure to a Cloud base initiative vs On-premise and how that works with current areas not part of the Scope.

There is so many easy things that can get over looked during initial discovery. Ensure time is being spent for these discovery tasks.

Many of the other replies are spot on in their statements.

Dear Maribel,

Depending on the organisations structure you should be able to get some access to information about the current spend of your organisations IT budget for the financial year to date. It will look good in any interview you go to if you can give a breakdown of the spend and how you would see your role and approach going forward.

Dear Maribel,

Good to hear. By the way if they ask how you obtained the information, it must through a way that everybody else can obtain the information, the difference being internal and external candidates.

Glad to hear you spent some time here. You know discussing the weather is a past time in Ireland. :-)

Thanks for providing the discussion.

WBS changes depending on whether it is on-premises or a cloud service.

If you are on-premises, you need enough lead time to procure hardware.
Careful consideration is also required for capacity.

If it is a cloud service, I think it is better to increase the items to consider about availability and security.
