In an interview with Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf on toastmasters website, John stated “I think careers are three-legged stools: First, work for a company that shares your values; second, work for a boss who cares about you; and third, invest in yourself.”

The values that the global project management community defined as most important are stated in the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct:
Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, and Honesty (https://www.pmi.org/-/media/pmi/documents/...c_lang_temp=en)

1. What other ethical values do you subscribe to?
2. How do you go about confirming that the company you are about to start working for shares these values?

I do not really subscribe to any particular value as I strive to be ethical in what I do, whether that takes being honest, treat others with fairness, etc.

The second question, however, is a bit more difficult. Most companies talk the talk so on the surface it looks great and often this only surfaces much later. I used to work for a very large international company that has all the bells and whistles, which included an ethics committee. But I realized (much too late) that this committee was used to protect the leadership team instead of enforcing ethics. I would suggest using sites like Glassdoor. While not totally objective it does give you some insight into possible areas of concern.
@Anton - Thank you for sharing your story - how sad to have an ethics committee that does not have any teeth! While ethics awareness is great, having measures and penalties at their disposal would have made the committee more effective. Thank you also for mentioning glassdoor.

Integrity, transparency and keeping things simple are something that I subscribe to. Most of the organizations says what seems right and do what seems right for the business, so its nearly impossible to gauge if they really subscribe to these values or not.
@Alankar - Thank you for adding integrity and transparency to the mix (Kiron and yourself are on the same page). I was wondering if you could share how you go about finding the company's values given that as you stated "Most of the organizations says what seems right and do what seems right for the business, so its nearly impossible to gauge if they really subscribe to these values or not."

1. Do the right thing, every single time. Especially when under pressure.

2. Equal treatment and opportunity to all.
@MD Sarfaraj - Thank you for adding your thoughts. I was wondering if could share how do you go about confirming that the company you are about to start working for shares these values?

Company's values are hard to really and deeply understand, they're more in actions than in words.
@Fabio - Thank you for adding your thoughts. I was wondering of you could share what values (in addition to the Code values) do you subscribe to? and as company's values are more in actions - what sort of action would attract your attention to confirm that a company share/does not share your values?

Kiron,

Well presented.

How many companies/hiring managers did provide information for contact that is no longer with them, to you? what percentage?
I never got such information, I did ask often.
@Vincent - Thank you for posting this question and thank you @Kiron for sharing your experience.
I share with you that companies are not likely to provide this information - especially if they attribute it to privacy.

Great topic and way of putting it Amany. The company values are those that matter to the actual project staff and motivates them to work - integrity, honesty, compassion, empathy and transparency. These come to my mind as the topmost.

I guess the leadership has to invest in some of these consciously and instill the same in the team members.

Thx
@Deepa - Thank you for adding integrity, honesty, compassion, empathy and transparency to the mix.

Indeed great topics, Amany, thank you for posting it. I would like to add an idea to the second one: the values of a company. When starting your own firm this should be one of the most important things to focus on: to embed the ethical values (the ones you believe in, you want to be followed by all your future employees, and you want your clients to see and feel) within the company culture. Of course that it is easier said than done, as it is a continuous, never ending effort with no quick wins or immediate results. However, a constant focus on it will payoff on the long term, and can make you extremely proud when looking back :) For those who are passionate about the subject I would recommend the book Delivering Happiness by Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh. It hugely influenced me.
@Simona - Thank you for sharing your thoughts - the emphasis on the values setting your own company. I was wondering if you could share how would you then confirm that the other clients/customers/customers you engage with have the same values? and how much would that matter?

Amany

I usually carry myself with Honesty, Transparency and Loyalty. One can't 100% confirm if the company they work for do truly shares those values or not until they try and work with them. See is believing when it comes to values.

@Rami - Thank you for sharing and adding honesty, transparency and loyalty to the mix. As I was reading your response, a TV program was talking about the negative aspects of loyalty - does it mean covering for your mates/company in any situation?
While seeing is believing - any steps or actions that you take before joining the company to ensure that they share your values (ie they respect honesty, transparency and loyalty)?

Dear Amany,

Throughout the course of your career your priorities will change accordingly and what you may have seen as important at the start of you career maybe be more fine tuned, focused, educated or completely different. As individuals it is difficult to make lasting change unless we find individuals who share and agreed with our own moral compass and approach to ethics. I find the most important aspect is understanding your own moral compass and sticking to it even in environments or workplace were it maybe dangerous, hazardous or career impacting. It is easy for organisations to give an outward view of the latest global trend at the time in order to stay relevant in consumers eyes and to inadvertently increase sales. I find the most important approach is to educate people and bringing them along on the journey that will ultimately lead to a better outcome for all parties involved.
