One of the things I learned during my career was to name projects.
Give them an identity!

If you already give a name to your projects that name is: FABULOUS, ATTRACTIVE, SPECTACULAR, EXCITING (for yourself, for the team, for the customer)?

Hey Luís, I've heard lots of talks about this topic before and people are unanimous to say yes! It make sense. About name, I already had nice names like: Asclepio for a project in health, Lego for insurance and other curious names, but in general people are used to correlate it to the scope directly.

If you notice "Secret project" for "Secret client" is a name :-)

Do people (team, stakeholders, customers) feel impacted by the name?
Luis,

The initial request by the client was that both the project and the client not be told to anyone, so it became the "Secret Project", form the "Secret Client". It did give it some attractiveness.

Dear Luis,
You are welcome, as per my experience, we have multiple projects with same clients, we are giving the name to projects as per below criteria:
• should be short
• should be meaning full
• the name should be unique
• should be easy to not face any problem in communication
• should be easy if need to search in DMS
• should not take much space, for folder printing
Ahmad,

The set of rules; short, meaningful, unique, clear of confusion.
What do you qualify has easy for searching in DMS?

Dear Vincent,
Our company completed more then 200+ projects (including small and big), we are using Document Management System (DMS) for saving the files and easy sharing the documents, If any information needed from projects completed years back should be easy to find/search.

Interesting what you wrote: "It can actually be quite challenging to come up with a project name and accompanying acronym that sounds pleasing to the ear"

Regarding NaMMs. I honestly have no idea.
Can anyone identify the name?
You won't find the name searching the net.

What do team members say about their names? And the customers? And the remaining stakeholders

Dear Luis,

I think the naming of projects comes from the Military where specific operations where given names like Operation Overlord for the D-Day landing in France. This tradition has migrated to project management and specifically the large budgets that the Military have to spend and the private sector helping them to spend it. Normally before a project gets approval it is given a working title (a bit like a movie script/title) and this name may change when given approval and a start date. For me the naming nomenclature for projects comes from a mixture of what the project is about, what can easily be remembered, will the name be used for marketing purposes and what name has not been used before. Sometimes for secrecy issues the name maybe completely different to the objectives of the project.

Dear Luis,

Each organisation may have its own unique approach to naming projects or they just may follow a version control numbering systems.

Yes, it is mandatory to give a name to the project in our organization. The name should be self explanatory as some of program managers & platform heads are switching between different projects on every other call, status reports or review meetings. The name normally includes Bank name & type of product/project. For e.g, it can be XYZBank CR2020 or ABCBank VAM Implementation or AAABank Singapore Liquidity Impli. Project code is also attached to the project for MIS purpose.

I cannot imagine a situation of a project without name, unique identifier or code name. Can you, Luis?

Are the names you designate related to the scope of the projects?
In your opinion these names are: FABULOUS, ATTRACTIVE, SPECTACULAR, EXCITING (for yourself, for the team, for the customer)?
