Hello Anupama: A willingness to learn, someone who wants to roll up their sleeves and help out - and be willing at times to go above and beyond is the personality that has helped me identify developing leaders. Mentoring is a great way to support others and I am currently mentoring a wonderful person I met at the PMI Global Conference. We work together on building and developing her skills. She is definitely a rising star!

Dear Anupama
Interesting your question
Thanks for sharing

4 qualities of personal leadership:
- Vision
- Passion
- Discipline
- Character

I think these 4 qualities of personal leadership can help you to identify.

How to help develop leadership?

Communicating to people their value and potential so clearly that they end up seeing them in themselves

Hi Anupama,

Good question.

I agree with Luis about the leadership qualities. However I would like to mention that Integrity & courage are few more qualities of a leader which should be added to the list.

You identify potential leaders during your regular team interactions. One of the way to identify them is asking some powerful questions during periodic meetings & hear the answers from each of team members. The creativity & courage of a team member to stand up and say truth brings forth hidden leaders in the team. With little hand-holding & encouraging them to speak up as well as provide probable solution are some of the ways you can start identifying and grooming leaders before you recommend team member for may be formal leadership training.
Yes, during the journey, you need to continuously mentor the person to bring out best in them.

First thing to put clear is what leader meant or better which is the type of leadership to detect it inside each person. Second, in my case, I apply a simple way of behave and thinking: "I am going well if you are going well". With that on mind I can help to people to moving forward just in case they want it. "With great power comes great responsibility" and they have to accept it.

So much has been written about leadership that is becoming a wild card board.

Leadership has been linked to people that have drive, energy, stamina, experience, reputation, credibility... Not only this, but they are also competent, skilled in communication, they are eloquents. Not only this, they are assertive and at the same time score high in emotional intelligence.

This is how it can be detected. To further enhance it, take this person under the wing and fly together. Attending expensive courses at fancy business schools comes second.

Dear Anupama,

The most important trait in a potential project manager is a willingness to learn and that they have not developed any potentially bad traits. Also the amount of personal time and effort you are willing to allocate in order to develop this individual into a leader. I would be against the approach of looking for someone 'just like me' a little mini me as this never bodes well as you may set up unrealistic expectations upon the individual. The most important trait a leader needs to own at the end of training is to be respect by all that they command.

One way I identify emerging leaders is when I see them growing a person, stretching themselves by learning and using new skill sets, and whether they have followers.

Well I’ve broken down my team of more than 25 staff into small squads like military units to achieve this strategic directive.

We should look for self-initiation, unlearning & relearning trait, effective communicator, quick decision making, qualitative & quantitative analysis and least but not least man of character.

Hope it helps…
