During the month of February, ProjectManagement.com will focus on Creativity.

When we think about creativity in the workplace, there comes with it some level of trepidation from fear of some negative perception. In order to truly support and excite others to be and share creative ideas, there is a need for trust and psychological safety in the organization.

And when this happens there is now a mechanism in place to foster creative and innovative ideas.

Please share any success stories you have experienced in your career when the workforce felt safe to be creative.

If you have a story where a project or initiative failed because of a lack of creativity, please share that experience, if there was a level of psychological safety in the organization, and how the project or initiative could have been saved from failure.

Dear Andrew
Thank you for sharing the February 2020 Hot Topic with us

If there are people in the world who use creativity to solve situations, one of them is the Portuguese :-)

Dear Community - any additional thoughts on the effect of culture on creativity in the workplace?

Creativity in the workplace needs genuine support from the top down. This can take many forms, but essentially must all for staff to act on a personal basis where the overall driver is for the good of the company. Some companies have fostered creativity through free time and space incorporated into work time for employees to undertake personal projects. For projects I have personally found where there is trust between Sponsor and PM, and a willingness to engage beyond the strict confines of the project, delivery through collaboration internally and with external parties takes a leap forward, and engenders relationships that endure long after the project. Creativity is not just about something new, but about changing perceptions of old problems or embedded processes and being willing to change what needs changing. Not everyone is comfortable with change, so being flexible with those people (call it creative if you will) is necessary.
