According to an article Harvard business review there are 4 types of project managers with the following characteristics described bellow:
1 -Strategy should be, 2-Growth opportunity is, 3 -organizational followers should,
4 - Weapon of choice.

Prophet - 1 -Challenged. 2- A grand vision. 3 -Do a leap of Faith. 4 - Persuasive vision
Gambler - 1 -Followed. 2 -A bet. 3 - Gamble a bit and pursue rewards 4 - Potential Reward.
Expert - 1 - Challenged. 2 - An analisys. 3 - Listen to be advice act upon this 4 - stay within strategy and Follow analisys.
Executor- 1 - Followed. 2 - A sure thing. 3 - Well supported arguments. 4 -Business cases and reports.

According the article, the bottom line is that the diversity of styles offers a competitive advantage in terms of business development, and all four types are necessary pieces of your organizational constellation, even though the optimal dose of each may differ.

I found this article funny, interesting and arguably, good to promote a discussion
Do you think it is possible to divide the project managers in this categories (for me this is a novelty)?
If you agree with this classification what do you think is the optimal dose of each type? (Should depend of the type of the organization)

Alexandre,

I will look at the article. In my opinion, like personalities or character strengths, everyone has a bit of all. According to the situation, the best will use the one more appropriate.

Vincent,

Thanks for share your opinion. I agree with you, but we know for a fact that generally we have some characteristics more dominants than others.

I think that different phases of a project requires different PM characteristics. At various stages you may need to be the Prophet, the Gambler, the Expert and the Executor however you may define these. The role may also be determined by the nature of the project and experience of the team. A complex project with a novice team may need a stronger/authoritative hand. I believe a seasons PM needs to be able to determine what is required and govern accordingly

Peter,

Thanks for participating in the discussion, I globally agree with you, but as we know project managers are persons and like in any circumstances the personality influence all actions they execute , some are more conservative , others prone to risk , etc... Besides that we also have to join the organization risk tolerance.

Agreed. We all work within an envelop however you want to keep that envelop as open as possible to allow you the flexibility to meet the project challenges. Rigidity of character is risk not to be ignored.

Dear Alexandre,

It is the desire of all project managers to have more than one weapon in their arsenal that they can draw on when and if the situation arises. Some of these skills come naturally and may have been learned through different non work related situations while other skills are developed and evolve through various projects a project manager would undertake in their career. I would see the classification of project managers into various grouping based on personal characteristics and attributes as a mechanism to try and breakdown the ingredients it takes to make a project manager. It takes hard work, determination, self learning and a lot of other attributes to become a project manager, not simply something that can be defined or explained in an article. But for learning purposes it make sense in trying to understand what makes something tic.

Daire
Dear Dare,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The purpose of the article is academic, as you emphasize, I am curious by nature and I like to share with the community others perspectives. Only time will tell if this has value or not, but in the end, important is that makes us think about the topic.

Hi Alexandre,

I'd like to read the article, do you have a link?

based on your summary I find it extremely interesting the article positions the PM in an authoritarian type leadership role; the Prophet evangelizes, the Gambler pushes reward over risk, the Expert teaches, and the Executor directs. Even Kiron's Bureaucrat is guided by rules and governance. The use of a "weapon of choice" seems to put the PM in an adversarial position between the project team and the stakeholders.

With that in mind, I'd like to add another type for consideration: The Servant Leader 1 - Serve 2 - Collaboration with stakeholders 3 - focus on communication 4 - Teamwork

I've found that the teams I lead perform better when I let them self-organize while I am focused on clearing roadblocks, managing scope, and helping them be more efficient. I tell the team that I am the least important member, and the easiest to replace; if the team loses a developer or a business analyst they lose all the knowledge that that person has. If they lose their PM they can keep on with a minimum of lost knowledge.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

-Scott

Dear Alexandre,

Agreed. The article takes a scientific approach to project management traits. It would be interesting to know what traits the most successful project managers have. By success I mean projects that have the greatest impact on their respective audience.
