You are responsible for IT maintenance in your organization. The head of the IT department comes to you with an internet security expert and tells you to disable auto login and force authentic login based on a new password. The password will be 15 characters long and consist of letters, numerals, and one special character, and this password must expire after every 30 days. This is an example of:
(a) Operation
(b) Project
(c) Maintenance
(d) None of the above

I'd suggest that this could be treated as a project as it meets the PMBOK Guide definition and beyond that has sufficient change management implications that it would be better managed that way vs. operations or maintenance.

Of course, this is always an "it depends" situation in the real world as some companies define minimum thresholds (e.g. cost, effort) for projects and this might fall below those thresholds.

Saf, having seen this in practice and it was a part of IT operations.

Every task operations performs has a start and an end, but it is something that is not unique, thought the outcome might be slightly different each time.

Changing password rules and login features are functions previously implemented by a project but once operational, this would be using them for an operational task.
