Dear Daire

Two different issues:
- Contents.
We absolutely agree.
It is important to select as areas of study according to our preferences and / or interests (which may vary over time)
- Study time.
That is, dedication to deepen our knowledge in the areas we selected
Dear Luis,
You may see them as separate points but my original point is if you do not see work as work or study as study or education as education because you enjoy doing what you are doing then there is no reason to dedicate a portion of a day, week or month to study as it becomes something that you want to do not something that you feel you need to do. So early on in your career you may try a lot of different areas of work to see what you like and then when you find something that you like then that is where you spend most of you time.

A big part of growing as a project manager is learning outside of the project management world. We are designed to be integrators. That means you need some accounting, some HR, some IT, etc.

Stephane, That’s exactly right because the knowledge you get fro my that experience is limited so you need to expand. Everyone is responsible for their own growth.

Do you dedicate, on a regular basis, an amount of study hours per day, week, month or year?

I have to admit I am having some difficulty with this concept. The idea that one can delegate specific time to learning. "I am going to learn from 2:30 to 4:00 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays". Learning is a continuous process from birth to ...
Additionally, you may be able to expose yourself to information for a specified time and place but that does not necessarily translate to learning.
Now, you may mean learning specific to your trade or discipline but all you do and learn has an impact, or should have an impact, on your trade. especially as a project manager. One of the biggest part of project management is people skills - this is learned through every day exposure to people - dealing with your spouse, your kids, your neighbors, at the store, at the hockey arena. Strategy can be learned through sports, hobbies, even driving. There is also an argument that one learns during sleep through dreams.
The best way to actually translate 'opportunity to learn' to actual learning is to have an open mind and recognize that all learning is good and translatable to your job as a project manager.
So, I claim 24 hours a day during which I am exposed to the possibility of learning, some (much) of it relates to my chosen profession.

As Peter put it, Luis, most of my days are focused on learning and growing. It can be as simple as asking myself "how can I do this better?" after each activity.

That's one way. One can also interact with real people and use the powers of observation. Not all study has to be formal or academic.
Also, "study" and "learning" are not interchangeable words, learning may be the result of study but not necessarily. :-)
