Hi David,

I am not sure about switching the organizational focus to product work streams but ensuring the teams are self-organizing properly is, I think, the role of the Scrum Master and not that of the PM.

Many PMs also play the role of the Scrum Masters but this is not the rule. Some years ago I worked as a software developer for a software product development department and they did not have PMs but they did have the role of the Scrum Master.
Dear Adrian

Hi Luis - By our very nature, we are all imperfect beings. But we have the capacity to achieve great things. A PM with strategic leadership skills and emotional intelligence and with a growth mindset can be a great example to his/her team

Adrian, very true. If the PM's role exists at all then that usually means there's room for improvement. Make teams more effective so that SMs/POs/others don't need the support of a PM.

Hi David,

Some years ago I worked as a contractor for a large Australian utility company. It was a technical role and I was working on a one-man project team. Despite the fact that I was working alone and I was in direct contract with the business users a PM was assigned to the project. I only saw him once and only said hello to him but he had a role on the project.

My point is the that the role of the PM is broader and handling the project team is not always the most important part of the job. Some PMs manage internal small projects without even knowing who actually works on them.

If you have a fixed budget for which a fixed scope has to be delivered you would always need a PM or someone that performs this role no matter how self-organized or effective the team is.

You can only "get rid" of the PM if you move to an activity that does not involve a fixed budget for delivering a fixed scope. I agree with you that in software development moving from projects to product development could eliminate the need of having PMs (I have seen this with my own eyes) but not all companies can do this move.

Dear Luis,

I think everybody has their own unique vision of what perfection looks like and accordingly everyone's list will be some way differ. But there are some over riding traits that a project manager must have in order to be with in a least a shot of reaching perfection. Amongst the usual traits of being a good communicator, ability to manage complex situations and ability to train team members to fill skills gap; I would say that increasingly as you have alluded to in your other posts is Emotional Intelligence and Empathy. The ability to 'read' a situation and people and be able to respond on a human level and not necessarily at a manager or operations level is important and will quickly build up loyalty, trust and unity with a project team. Skilling up team members takes time, energy, resources and an interest so staff retention is an increasingly important consideration for project managers as more and more organization look to go the route of a structured approach to project implementation and management.

Dear Luis,

I would agree with a lot of what Tom Peter's has wrote but I would prefer to see these characteristics in a CEO or COO as apposed to a project manager. Granted it would also make a fantastic project manager but somebody that I would want to promote in my organization. I especially agree with 'owning' the problem and acting accordingly. The person that Tom Peter's describes is someone who is completely confident in their own ability and thus confident that they do not need self assurance from anybody else. An independent thinker who can size up each situation and act decisively.

Dear Luis,

I would say that Tom Peter's approach to duality is recognition of the difference in managing a team made up of variying personalities. Something can be simple but also complex at the same time. It may be simple to explain to complex to implement. I do not see duality as conflicting or flip flopping on an issue but instead using your own experience, traits and abilities to see the approaches that an individual will use to solve a problem.

Dear Luis,

Its about using a measured approach in order to respond to a situation. It also depends about how many tools you have in your toolbox and not using a hammer when a chisel will do. Tom Peter's approach is about shaping the work environment not bludgeoning it as ripples create waves and one bad response can have ramification further along the line.
