I have a manager that does not communicate well. How do I as a PM communicate in a way that decision s/he makes are in the best interest of my program?

Hi Anonymous ... "doesn't communicate well" is rather subjective. Do you mean that the PM doesn't manage project communications well, i.e. no communication plan ... stakeholder identification etc., or that their communication style is poor?

Hi,

It is time to step back and observe a bit. There is obviously a reason why management can't communicate. Perhaps they are putting out too many fires in the day, and don't have time. Perhaps you are trying to lead them to the answer using the socratic method, and they don't have enough time or like the outcome. Perhaps, your communication styles are not in synch. I'd suggest observe the individual, find out what works, and doesn't work. If you have seen an item fail at least twice, on the third time ask for suggestions. Be Frank on how timely transparent communications are critical to your combined success. There are deeper causes here.

Hope this helps,
Elyse
