I'm not sure where you want to go with this but here are some thoughts. My experience and interest is in physical deliverables - primarily infrastructure project - so I'll respond from that perspective.
Environmental engineering is about sustainability over the life cycle of the project deliverable. How do we deliver a project that will provide results over the long run? Energy costs will increase and water will become scarce so we need to minimize consumption, climate is changing so we need to adapt, public expectations will become more defined, regulations will provide greater constraints to operational parameters. Every action has a reaction, every activity has side effects. We should be looking at environmental considerations as opportunities rather than constraints.
In delivering an infrastructure project I expect the project team to consider the environmental impact of major design and construction decisions - "What are the environmental risks and opportunities? How can we deliver a project that will not only survive but maintain performance for its life expectancy?
The objective is not only to minimize adverse environmental impact but enhance environmental benefits. Minimizing adverse environmental impacts costs money. Enhancing environmental benefits makes money. Environmental engineering provides the path to financial success and improvement to quality of life.

We need to take things from GPM (Green Project Management) to incorporate to all our projects. At least, is what I am doing from long time ago but now some organizations are putting more focus on do not distroy the environment.
