During the month of March, ProjectManagement.com will focus on Leading-Edge PM Trends.

What are the trends that you are seeing in your industry and you see could make the biggest difference (positive or negative) to your career?

Most recently, I am looking at the opportunities that AI can bring to my job and trying to see how I can use it in a highly sensitive and regulated environment.

We are observing digital transformation as a dominating trend. As they say "every business is a digital business" - nearly every project has to deal with some aspect of digitalization. It could be the cloud or mobility or social or analytics.

Any practising PM has to understand that digital transformation is not just technology adoption - it churns the enterprise causing multiple changes which needs to be handled in an integrated manner.

Looking into the potential of AI for project managers.

1. saw the use of neuronal networks in project estimations - as documented by Ricardo Vargas some years ago

2. read about VR/AR capabilities to create experiences in our memories and with that influencing our perspectives and behaviors
- could be useful in change management projects but also in other mass stakeholder influencing uses (beware of ethics)
- could also be used in virtual teams to increase communication and trust
- is already used in education and training

3. looking into BIM as a digital twin of the project product, so simulations, design, reviews become much more possible. Put some algorithms in the tool and much of the white collar work is gone. Construction industry is leading here, albeit not everywhere yet. Hugh potential to cut cost by 20% and durations by 50%.

I'm super excited to see the possibility of AI and what it means for us.

I'm also interested to see if more people adopt the digital twin as you mention. It has some great potential

Emily -

Not as much of a trend as a current reality. Covid-19 might cause us to shift our training delivery for a period of time from "in person" to virtual which can be challenging for highly interactive, tactile-based, team-oriented exercises.

Thank you all!

@Kiron: are you already seeing drop offs in training attendance? Or do you find that the infrastructure exists and is stable enough for you to make an easy transition?

Our company is more looking into AI as well, but that causes a lot more backend work for the IT Departments, and is causing some issues as our resources are limited with the recent turnover we have seen.

One thing our department is working on looking into is a translator where it will hear and listen to the meetings, and create a meeting minutes or a transcript, instead of us having to type and revise notes. This came along during our increase in project assignments, which I think will be very beneficial, so we can focus on more of the needed project tasks and follow ups we need to complete.
