Dear All,

I am very new to Ms Project. I was always rely on Ms Excel while tracking the projects. I now would like to move to Ms Project. I now have doubt while scheduling my tasks. I have the start date 1/Feb/2010 and finish date 19/Feb/2010. However, the actual date that i started the activity was not that date (due to some reasons).

While facing such a problem, what should i do? should i just go straight and change the start date and finish date in Ms Project?

Please kindly advise

Thanks you very much for your time.

Best regards,
sanlen

As someone new to MS Project, I would highly recommend taking a class on the product. It's super powerful but I can't tell you how many times I have seen it mis used because users either a) didn't understand project management terminology used in MS Project, b) didn't understand the numerous ways of scheduling\reporting using MS Project (thereby not understanding the downstream impact of manually changing dates), and\or C) requirements were not clearly defined and documented before implementing and integrating MS Project company wide...

If you want to use MS Project to show you were you have lags\lead time in work packages than you do not want to force dates manually. If you are using MS Project simply as a check list, then you can force the date either manually or by setting the "must start on" or "must start no later than" buttons...

Hi Kimsan,

I just tried doing a google search for MS Project Training and came up with several sites that offer either training via DVD or training online. Perhaps that might help?

I'm not familiar with MS Project Online training so can't say who does it best - perhaps we might get some other contributors to lend their voice and experience in online training for this specific product.

I feel like a dunce - I totally forgot IIL offers online classes for MS Project. http://www.iil.com/msproject/2007_default.asp They offer online classes that may be of help. I personally have not taken their classes but have read good reviews.

I also found a link from another conversation on gantthead.com at http://www.tacticalprojectmanagement.com/t...evelopment.html

Kimsan, welcome to the wonderful world of Microsoft Project. It is really a great product. The more you learn it and use it (assuming you have a need to), the more you will like it. I would only add and recommend that you should find and develop a relationship with someone you know or work with that can be your mentor and help you with your use of Microsoft Project. There are so many wonderful features of MS Project that are easy if you know how to use them, yet sometimes difficult if you are new to MS Project or using it without formal training. Keep at it. You won't be disappointed.
