It won't be an easy ride.

There is this perception out there that being a project manager means that you just sit and tell others what to do. If you start out young you tend to hope for that. If you get into PM a bit later you probably know better.

That Project Management is more about people management and less about Technology and deliverable. If someone had told me that years ago , I would have probably stayed away and concentrated on a specific Technology stream by being an Architect or Consultant.

Since Deepesh scooped my normal response to this question, my backup is "Risk is uncertainty that matters" (to quote Dr. David Hillson).

In my early years as a project manager I saw 'process' as the be-all and end-all. This concept was reinforced by my training and my mentors. When I joined PMI in the 90s I thought I had found the answer to all project management challenges.
I wish someone had told me that project management is risk management by another name. The only reason we manage projects is to minimize risk of negative impact and enhance opportunity for positive impact, everything else are available tools to achieve that.

Someone told me not to try to become a project manager.
And I became one.

I once decided never to regret a decision but to deal with it. Saves a lot of trouble. What-if questions should be posed for the future only. There is a direction of time. The past cannot be changed.

Stakeholders. I got my PMP before Stakeholder Management became a separate subject area. It was certainly deserving of its own area.
