According to information provided by PMI we are:
- 593,211 members
- 302 chapters and 7 potential chapters spread around the world

What initiatives have been taken in view of the crisis caused by Covid-19?

Here's an idea:
Collection of funds for acquisition:
- Masks
- Gloves
- Glasses
- Protective clothing
- Fans
- Other hospital supplies

This collection of funds would be carried out at the global level (with distribution by the chapters of funds according to the donations)

Use PMI means to raise funds (websites, video production) and / or disseminate contributions (funds collected and products purchased)

Use the volunteer network to:
- Raising funds to be sent to PMI
- Contact product and equipment suppliers

Dear Daire

Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your opinion

As a PMI member and volunteer, I sincerely expected more.
I expected a global response articulated with existing chapters

Think global, act local
Dear Luis,

Do you mean Think Local, Act Global?

You must remember that the COVID-19 started as one case that quickly spread in a community, then a town, then a city, then a country, then a region, then a continent and now it is across all the major continents.

I believe if this virus was caught early at source the impact would be a lot less.

When you think global, the wheels of action take a longer to turn and a lot further to turn. If your quick, responsible, working within your community, using recommended and proven approaches, this will have a faster, better response and make it a more affordable approach.

Why use a hammer when a chisel will do. Its about taking personal responsibility within the existing community were you reside and instigating change.

We do not need a voice from above directing us on something we already know about.

Despite this, I would like to see and participate in an initiative by the PMI and / or PMIEF Board

No question, PMI and its army of volunteers could do a lot to help with crises on a global or local scale, however, at present the best that anyone can do who is not a medical professional is:

1. Follow the recommended good practices - e.g. handwashing, social distancing, avoiding any unnecessary travel outside the home
2. Finances permitting, donate to charities which are able to make a tangible difference
3. Virtually help those who might be worse off than we are through references, recommendations and so on.

Kiron
Kiron,

yes, it is mandatory, that project managers are good citizens and even role models in their social environment.

For me (and for Luis I guess), this is not enough, as our purpose is to 'make ideas a reality'. So we have to support further

1. in mitigating the harm done (not only by the virus, but more by our social behaviors)
2. in actively preparing for and driving the dramatic shift induced by this extraordinary disruption.

Why we? Because our role is to provide certainty, hope, vision to our fellow humans.

No question - we should all do what we can to help, but in this specific case, virtual help is better than in person unless we are in a position to provide direct medical assistance to those affected, otherwise we risk making the problem worse.

Dear Andrew

Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your opinion

I was referring to a project led by PMI:
- Fundraising from members: 593,211 members x $ 10.00 = about 6 million dollars
Thank you, Luis, for sharing this opinion.

A fundraising campaign would take time. Do we take into account the time criticality and consider other options? I agree whatever done is great, but the time is now.

The logistics for this are enormous. Some options are:
1. Create a digital marketing campaign to elicit donations
2. Proactively donate to the cause on behalf of all members
3. Replenish funds as donations arrive
4. Deliver another campaign to begin using a percentage of membership fees for future donations, to this or other causes

This situation caused by covid-19, contrary to what we can imagine (unfortunately) will take longer

Your ideas are more feasible than mine (taking into account the necessary logistics)

The only point I would add was:
- Select some (few) organizations to channel the funds raised to

Dear Luis,

What I have noticed from other organization is that they are offering their services and online tools for free to people who are affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.

For PMI this could be an opportunity to increase membership, interest in project management as well as educating the masses to the approaches of project management that could be applied to daily life.

PMI could team up with Microsoft and offer free MS Project Access as well as online courses on how to use the software in conjunction with PMBOK and project management methodology.

Each organization should look at what it does and how they can offer their services in the spirit of giving and increase awareness as well as corporate social responsibility.

Also offer limited membership of PMI to people on the front line who have little knowledge of logistics and project management.

There are many things that PMI can do to improve the situation for those effected. I would not be an advocate of donation as money is not the answer to the problem as has been proven but improved education and awareness.

This is an opportunity for PMI to extend its reach and make itself more relevant to peoples daily lives.

Dear Luis,

That may be the cause but there is an expression, Never Waste A Good Crisis.

As you have said yourself you believe that they way we work and how we work will look very different when we come out of this COVID-19 outbreak.

However they are easy words to say and I believe this COVID-19 outbreak could be the catalyst that we all need to be the driver of change and make the workplace a much more equal, inclusive and progressive place to be.

The really challenge from the COVID-19 outbreak will be how as a society, communities, organizations, Governments and countries bounce back as many people talk themselves into a recession I believe if anything there will be a mini boom as the other side of the COVID-19 outbreak.
