It is not a PM topic, but I am genuinely interested in hearing from you. Is it an ethically responsible action? Should the donations be done anonymously?

I think we are at the point where donations, regardless of the underlying motive, will help in some way, whether it is to provide protective supplies for front-line health workers, funding vaccine research projects or building shelters and hospitals.

There are very few people and companies that operate in a purely selfless way when it comes to philanthropy - so long as the benefit they gain doesn't cloud the value of the philanthropy, let them shout it from the rooftops.

Agree with Kiron - "all hands on deck" is needed in times of crisis and you "cannot look a horse gift in the mouth".

It is worth to point that in normal times, Social Responsibility initiatives have usually a few highly influential CSR champions but are short lived because ROI is not there.
Look at some initiatives under Virgin umbrella that gained so much CSR publicity in past decade - most of them folded or re-org'd b/c eventually money spent was bigger than money made.
On the other hand, endowments and foundations are successful at philanthropic spending and ensuring their long-term operations b/c they budget their expenses on CSR initiatives like if they were shark-tank businesses.

Kiron and Andrew on spot on... Take it where and how you get it. A company that makes a public announcement may be looking to at least get some positive recognition in the community or their industry . It may also lead to other industry partners looking to keep pace and not get "one-up'd" by the competition and make their own donation... Whatever the motive... The cash is what is needed.

Be Safe All...

It's normal for organizations to announce their donations. Their PR people want to make the most of every situation. In best case scenarios, it might encourage other organizations to do the same.

That said, I have a lot of respect for organizations that silently contribute.
