As we all know, there are just different kinds of projects.
Apart from projects whose product will be something physical and tangible like House, Road; or services.

There are projects whose product will be a change in an organizational process from old to a new process or ways of doing things.
These kinds of projects are mostly called Process Improvement Projects. They have several methodologies which the most popular one being Six Sigma.

singe Process Improvement projects are also projects but seems to have different approach to them, can we suggest that PMI offers Six Sigma certifications and Book of Knowledge for Six Sigma Projects just as we have for Agile Project Management?

Dear Ekemini,

I have not sure if it is a good strategy, because there are in this area multiple players offering certifications. None of these certifications is recognized officially for any government or official entity however some have more reputation then others. Beside that you have several flavours on that six sigma, lean six sigma etc..
In the end PMI able you to taylor your project to introduce the specific concepts of six sigma, you only must be able to domain the technical expertise of the tools that six sigma include or have a black belt in your team.
Has example in my company six sigma is only used as process of quality plans applied to the projects.

Alexandre.

Project are not of a type. Project always be a part of the solution as a mean to create the product/service/result (solution is equal to "the thing" to be created plus "the process" to create it. Project is the second component). So, what you state, is in the "result" component of the definition. With that said, the approach you take is totally independent of the project. In fact, it could be maintaning low coupling and high cohesion with the project. In that way, your project will be successfull indeed. Between approaches, which are the basement of the architecture, you can take what best fit for your current situation. Inside it six sigma is an option. But I do not agree the PMI has to offer a certification.

I'd agree with Alexandre on this. PMI has already got into hot water for stepping into the BA world with the PBA when there was a well established certification (CBAP) already. For PMI to go into SS/LSS certifications would be stepping outside their core competency.

Lean is universally applicable, but many of the tools in SS don't apply in a project-context but rather an operational/process context.

There is a story behind all related to business analysis. I know that because I worked closely with both organizations from the very begining of business analsys role creation. Unfortunatelly, the PMI is making it again with all related to Agile. I hope the end will not be the same. And just in case it will be the same, the PMI will recover on that but at higher cost.

As a holder of multiple certifications including LSS, my thoughts are in line with those of Alexandre and Kiron.
