Compare jazz to agile project approach
What will be the role of the Project Manager?
What skills will be required in virtual environments?
A number of undeniable truths: 1) there will be projects, 2) the projects will have to be managed to be effectively delivered, 3) The project managers will have to use the tools and people available to successfully deliver the projects, 4) the tools and people will evolve faster and faster over time, 5) project managers will have to foresee these changes, recognize those that will advance the project, identify those that will adversely impact the project and adapt.
In other words, keep doing what we do best.

Dear Luis,
The point that I am trying to make is that history repeats itself an on numerous occasions in the past mankind has been staring down the barrel of a gun, faced with impossible odds and has managed to survive but a what cost.
Institutions, treaty's, accords and conventions that arose as a result of some challenge faced by humans do not seem to be any good at their job.
I do not think the project management profession will change beyond recognition or the workplace and work life will drastically change.
I do think that their is too many cooks in the kitchen and there is far too many global institutions established to focus on some aspect of human existence that does not do anything e.g. G20, G7, IMF, World Bank, EU, NATO and many other global institutions who only function is to send out invites.
You need to look at the bigger picture in relation to COVID-19 as there is a lot going on in the background that does not get reported on.
Daire
Daire,
Your analysis, in my opinion, is right on target. Recognizing that history will repeat itself and an outcry for new global institutions, treaties, accords, and conventions will arise from the crisis. What will the landscape look like? There will be practical, common-sense initiatives on the face of it all, but what will the opportunistic political initiatives look like – as they are likely to be the primarily back-end drivers, and how will all of this impact project professionals?
Are we going to have another year-2000-like focused effort for the project community?

I think this could be where true leadership and ability shines as those who hid in the shadows and just regurgitating what other people said have been exposed as frauds.
There is no simple answer to your question because history has not been kind in this regard and the only example we have to go on is human evolution and progress as some sort of tangible proof that humans can adapt to their environment.
In recent decade there has been unsustainable growth in the false economy. This is economy that has no direct benefit to the economy but exists purely to keep people in jobs and on paper look like it is contributing to the economy.
This is were the brunt of the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak will be felt.
Most economies will go through some sort of rationalisation, weeding out waste and business and product lines that are either not profitable or too costly to maintain.
Before it was consolidation (M&A) of businesses, however this proved to most businesses an expensive method of growth or increase market share.
Most businesses will focus on their core business and sell off anything that is not deemed essential.
I do not think Governments will be the main driver or enabler of this new reality but instead the private sector by necessity will required revisiting its business model.
As a result the type of projects that project manager will be required to implement will not be about expansion or additions to business structures, but identifying overlapping and duplication in business units and implementing solutions to resolve these issues.
In recent times business department and function have been outsourced and quality was backed up by contract, service level agreements and long term agreements.
As organisation see that increased productivity, through technology, can be achieve with less resources, you may see some of these function and responsibilities returning to organisations.
As a result you will see projects implemented around cloud migration projects and IT security projects.
As project managers, its about helping customers implement sustainable business model using existing resources.
The most power tool is still our voice and that has never changed. The ability and desire to confront what we know and see as counter productive and be the agents of change is what will set us apart from other professional working in the same space.

I've had the opportunity to focus on the virtual aspect of my craft. I prefer co-located efforts but have really had to learn to adapt my content and style to be more conducive virtually.
It also has made me more so recognize the importance of the informal conversations (hallway conversations) and how to incorporate those into the beginning of meetings.
While a very stressful and new time, has been a learning experience. Saving Changes...
