I know Microsoft has been evangelizing Project online, Teams and Power BI trio lately but has anyone tried using Project Professional 2019 with Teams to manage schedules and resources?

I did. And it is a mess. Mainly if you try to make resource management to share them between projects/programs. My recommendation is trying Microsoft Azure just to see if it fits for your requirements.

Sergio -

Azure is Microsoft's cloud service - I'm a little unclear how the underlying platform would address the specific capabilities which Murtaza is asking about so perhaps you could clarify this...

Murtaza - I would recommend that you look at one of the recent Gartner reports evaluating PPM solutions to understand how Microsoft's offering is positioned relative to others and then decide what would be the right fit for your organization.

When it comes to resource management, what I've found is that most enterprise-level tools will work, albeit some experiencing usability or performance issues. The bigger issue is the cleanliness of the source data in terms of accuracy and currency and getting consistent usage from the functional and project managers who need to enter and update the source data - if you can solve that issue, tooling usually is not as hard.

@Stéphane is right: Microsoft Azure DevOps is what we are using in my actual workplace. Thanks @Stéphane.

Finally we move out of that...we are using Workfront it needs improvement, however is very easy to manage project, programs and portfolio.
