One of my colleagues taught a PMP Prep course in early April, and one of the candidates in her class took and passed the online exam.

Here is the un-edited feedback from that individual:

"First of all, I learned that if you have an in-person exam scheduled, you will not see the online option. In order to see it, you need to cancel your exam (Fees are waved for now), and then re-apply and you will see the option.

I will do a quick bullet list of things that are good to know:

• you require a working webcam and microphone
• you can not have your phone near you during the test
• the test is open 30 minutes before to allow you to do the check-in process, which I will detail below
o it performs a systems test to ensure your internet speed is sufficient, and that you have a working microphone and webcam.
o they make you take pictures of your face, your ID (drivers license, etc) and 4 pictures of your desk area (front, back, left, right)
o you sign disclaimers about not sharing details of the test, etc.
• there is a tutorial at the beginning that lets you get used to the provided calculator and whiteboard (YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED A PHYSICAL CALCULATOR OR SCRATCH PAD/PEN)
o the whiteboard has plenty of functionality, and allows you to use text, which would allow the “brain dump”
o here’s an overview of the feature https://home.pearsonvue.com/op/online-proc...eboard-overview
o unfortunately the calculator must be operated with the mouse. It does not interact with your keyboard
• they make you download and install an application (OnVue) which, once the test begins takes over your full screen
• highlight/strike through options are available, but the application makes you highlight the text, and then choose strikeout or highlight (there are keyboard functions, but they are not very intuitive. I think highlight was Alt+J for example)
• There is a chat function at the top. If you click it, it calls a proctor (they won’t be immediate). I did this at the beginning just to see the feature, not realizing how it worked. They just wished me luck, and I proceeded??. This function would be used by the proctor in case of technical issues. If they could not reach you there, they would reach out via phone (this is your only exception to the phone rule)
• just a tidbit, because I was unsure – I had snacks beside me on my desk and ate them along the way, as well as water of course. They did not raise any concerns.
• The 10 minute break allowed me to use the restroom and stretch a bit. I only used around 4 minutes.

Aside from that, the interface is pretty intuitive. Everything I explained above is walked through in the tutorial.

For more information on it, here’s a link. In fact, this is where you need to go to take the test when it’s time!
https://home.pearsonvue.com/pmi/onvue"

It would be great if others who have taken the PMP exam online in the near term could share their experiences!

My PMP exam was scheduled today but I was unable to appear due to technical glitch. Just before the exam I did system check and it was successful then I proceeded for the exam, logged in and got the access key for exam but couldn't begin the exam as the network speed test failed every time and at the same time when I was running the system test with dummy access key it was showing successful. I ran system test yesterday and at the time of scheduling the exam as well every time it was successful. I took all the screenshots as well today. My internet speed was showing around 1.4- 3.8 mbps speed. I immediately wrote email to PMI customer care with all the screenshots. At the same time did chat with Pearsonvue customer care and my chat was transferred from one person to another and I was continued writing my concern again and again then the 3rd person logged my case and given a reference number by stating that I need to wait for 5 days and they'll revert back by email. It's not a good experience. Due to Covid situation the exam centers are also closed. I hope PMI and pearsonvue should resolve my issue and allow me to reschedule my exam without charging any additional fee.
I faced exactly the same issue, all system requirements everything was fine. I have been given a case number after getting errors on exam date August 3, still there is no resolution. I have been on call today since morning and pearson vue getting the status for the case. They then transferred the call to PMI and still no resolution. Really frustrating.

Hi Suruchi, I passed my exam today as I was to allowed to reschedule it. When I was unable to join my exam I immediately sent the screenshots of my network speed and dummy system test to PMI and also logged a case with PearsonVue and both of the customer care understood my issue properly and provided me the satisfactory resolution. I hope your issue also might have resolved till now.

Unfortunately, my online exam story is not good. I tried to take my PMP exam online today and had technical issues, so my exam is postponed until PMI looks at my case to see if I can reschedule. I think I will take the exam at a testing center. It was so stressful, not to mention the extreme disappointment in not being able to take it.

Thanks for sharing this Kiron, very useful feedback.
Hello,
Thursday I took in-person PMP exam at Pearson Vue and failed. I going to pay for the retake exam and scheduled for a month from now.

At the last exam attempt, I didn't feel comfortable using the sound cancelling headset Pearson Vue provided. It started to hurt after about 1 1/2 hours into the exam, plus I was wearing a mask which I kept opening at the bottom for fresh air.
I finished exam with 2 minutes to spare even though I had to call in the proctor twice with questions about reviewing my flagged questions.
That being said, I didn't have any issue with the online calculator for the in-person exam.

Question 1: Is the ONLINE exam calculator function key's position on the computer screen different than the IN-PERSON calculator function key's position on the screen?
I read the post above where the online exam taker could not find the calculator function key and only used I guess the white board, very time consuming.
I had no issue with the in-person calculator. The key is at the top on the horizontal tool bar.

During my in-person exam:
- My approach for the first half: I didn't flag any questions, that way I didn't have to watch the timer or worry about going back to review questions.
- Second half: Any math questions I flagged. I went back to them toward the end.
A couple of times, I took a mini break to calculate how much time I had left for each question, knowing I had to do flagged questions too. This kept me with a pace I needed. I had about 17 minutes at the end to go back to 5 math questions I had flagged.
Unfortunately, I didn't choose the right answers often enough!

Question 2: I noticed the online individual simulators have 1500 or so questions for about $139 or so. Why so many questions!!! I'd rather have two or three different authors.
I believe using one 3rd party vendor simulator author is a disadvantage because none of these 3rd party PMP vendor authors write the exam questions for PMI's PMP exam. All the 3rd party vendor authors are a disadvantage because of different word pattern usage and word substitution compared to PMI authors.
So do you or other of your colleagues have a couple of suggestions for decent 3rd party vendor authors that are more inline with the word pattern approach that the PMI authors use to present the PMP exam questions?
Thank you for your time. This is my first post on this site! The PMI rep mentioned below directed me to this forum.

While talking to the PMI rep after I failed the exam, he said starting in January, all 3rd party vendors who teach PMP online courses will be reacquired to only use PMI provide material which will eliminate this word pattern or word replacement issue, I'm convince. But for me this will not serve now as a benefit.
So do you have recommendations of TWO 3rd party vendors that are more inline with how PMI authors present PMP exam questions?
I don't think it is an advantage to only use one 3rd party vendor author either because of the described issue, unless he is a PMP Super Hero! :))

Sorry to hear that you didn't pass but don't feel discouraged. I personally find PM PrepCast and RMC Solutions simulation exams to be the best if you want my opinion.

Good Luck with your second attempt, hopefully it will be a pass.

Hello again,
This is a reply to Kiron Bondale's above post about the exam taker's experience with the online PMP exam.
She gave the link to the Pearson Vue Whiteboard unfortunately it is only a screen shot with instruction.
So I spent about 30 minutes searching on Google and You Tube for something to do with a whiteboard and finally came up with THE video where a 3rd party PMP instructor vendor had a student who found THE SAME WHITEBOARD used by another company for their online exams. This company has freely posted it online to use to get familiar with the whiteboard before their exams. DUH!!!
So I'm passing my research on to all the PMP Aspirants. Use it for a while so it will be second nature to use it during the PMP exam.
https://www.mba.com/exams/gmat-online/prep...line-whiteboard
Here's the You Tube video that started my search. Turns out it's a student that posted HERE on THIS Discussion Board back in May 22ish 2020!!! Look closely at the browser window link at the beginning of the video. :)) The past PMP student works at Genentech in San Diego which I know because the video has this info on the side with his name and the video speaker said Howard Jan said anyone could contact him. I'm a member of LinkedIn so I sent a message to him and a request to Link with him!!! I have a dear friend who also works at Genentech...smallllllllll world!

Hi Ramy, or anybody else :)

For personal computer issues reasons, my PMP exam was cancelled in the middle of it, mid-June. Since that PearsonVUE and the PMI had offer me a new chance "for free", but I didn't try to restart training and passing it. What do you reckon in term of self training website or app. I already had all the classes and Videos. I don't want to restart a full training for 230$. I just want a self training app for maxi 30$ - 50$ (€) just to make me remember. It seems that PM PrepCast and RMC Solutions don't have such possibility.

In advance thank you for your advise.

I am not aware of any program like this. I suggest you go for PM Prep Cast simulation exams as it will refresh your memory but that's my opinion.

Hi PMF,
I passed my PMP last week with Above Target result through self study. In the last month f the exam do simulation-pmbok-simulation-pmbok alternatively. I followed only pmbok because I've seen different videos, study material and simulations all deviate 20-40% from the pmp exam scope. Refer different free simulation tests but try to understand what's out of scope for the exam. Any single word which is not written in pmbok don't prepare for the exam just for example Maslow's hierarchy which is nowhere in pmbok so don't try to remember and assess yourself on such topics for exam purpose. Only PMBOK and free 200 simulation test questions by PMI are the best study material to refer.
All the best for your exam.
